I know of only two patches of Mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum) within walking distance—one being right behind my house. They are one of the first plants to pop up each spring, their distinctive leaves like umbrellas. I finally got photos of the flowers this year!

For anybody who wants to try it, this is what a #mandrake looks like. This member of the #nightshade family does not grow in the US. Podophyllum peltatum, aka #American mandrake or #mayapple, is known for its own potent medicinal properties & should not be confused with the European mandrake plant.

Mayapple Blossoms are hard to capture. You have to get ground level, and even then, many of them droop too low to get a nice picture, or the light is too low from their umbrella like leaves. I like this one with the purple phlox blooms behind it. 💜
