A Fieldfare stands on frost crusted decking in our back garden. It is standing with it's back to low winter sun and casts a long shadow across the icy decking. It has a a grey head and back, yellow beak and a yellow circle around it's eye. Around it's 'shoulders the feathers are medium brown making it look like it is wearing a stole. It's wings are dark brown and black.

Taken on a cold wet day in January the Fieldfare is sitting on a branch of a Guelder Rose where it has been feeding on the red berries. Rain is falling and it has formed droplets on the feather of the bird. The fieldfare is a large member of the thrush family and is slightly bigger than a blackbird. It has a characteristic blue-grey head with a yellow beak, brown-grey wings and a speckled breast. Each year, thousands of fieldfares leave Scandinavia and even Russia to spend the winter in the comparatively mild UK. The birds typically begin to arrive in September and nearly all will have left by late April.

I chose this one because it makes me laugh. Taken in our garden in January 2025, a Fieldfare is stomping across frost covered decking, it has one foot raised in the air as if about to bring thudding down on the deck. It has a really grumpy expression on it's face. It's almost as if it has been mortally insulted and is walking off in high dudgeon.

Lesser yellow-legs was a welcomed transatlantic tick on Bryher yesterday. But two lesserlegs today on Tresco felt a bit greedy. Only slightly eased by 4 yellow legs turning into 3 when one became one-legged. #ukbirding #migrantbirds
