A picture of our Whippet X Netty the day she came to stay. She is standing in the sunshine looking directly at the camera with a happy expression on her face. The light is coming from the right and glints off her black and white coat and her whiskers.
Tomorrow marks three months to the day since she came to stay, she has brought so much joy and has become part of the family... so that's why I chose this shot.

A juvenile, male, Greater Spotted Woodpecker in profile on a fat ball feeder. It has a pale red stomach and red tufts on the back of it's head which contrast with the predominantly black and white plumage.
Juvenile males start with a red cap on the front of their heads which migrates to the rear of the head as they mature. This was taken in May 2025 (in our front garden) so this bird would have hatched in 2024 and is nearing full maturity.
I chose this as it is, I think, my favourite Woodpecker capture ever.

Between two rows of bare winter trees a Fallow Deer stag is galloping away from the camera towards fog filled landscape, it appears as a silhouette against the fog.
I chose this as I love the atmosphere the foggy morning has created and because it is the first picture of a Fallow Deer that I have managed to get.

Picture of a Male Banded demoiselle (A damsel fly) it is metallic blue, with broad, dark blue patches on each wing. It is sitting on a water iris leaf with it's tail raised, it's wings are furled along it's body there is a drop of water between it's front legs.
I've chosen this because it is a stunning insect and we love seeing them in the garden.

The image shows a small, two storey, stone building standing right on the edge of Whiteness Voe (a sea loch), It is on a rocky promontory that sticks out into the calm blue waters of the voe. The building and the rocks are reflected in the water.
The building is called a böd in the Shetland dialect and was built to house nets, creels etc. for the local fishermen.
I've chosen this for it's simple beauty and calm atmosphere.

Black and White. Taken inside the Pickering Station of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, two unique petrol- electric 'Autocars' (Built in 1903) stand next to the platform beneath the metal trusses of the roof. Some passengers have already boarded waiting for the run through the Moors to Grosmont.
I chose this because I love the timeless feel and the way all the straight lines run parallel to each other into the distance.

I chose this because it is not far from where we live and it is always a pleasure to walk the grounds of the Priory.

Framed by trees the ancient buildings and stone walls of Clare Priory surround a lawn that has daffodils growing in it. Some of the original buildings are still in use and stand amongst the ruins of the original Priory.
Clare Priory was established 1248 by Richard de Clare, 6th Earl of Gloucester, as a friary for the Order of St Augustine and a cell of Bec Abbey, Normandy. It was the first house of the Augustinian Friars in England. It was a victim of Henry VIIIs 'Reformation' and closed in 1538. After passing through my hands the site was purchased by the Augustinians in 1953 and is an active Priory once again.

I chose this for the the stunning beauty and complete serenity of the moment.
Taken from a rocky outcrop on the Sound of Mull looking West. The sun is setting and turns the sky to gold on the left side of the image. The light catches the edge of a thick bank of cloud giving it an orange glow. The calm water of the sound glints with the colours in the sky while the hills of Mull and Ardnamuchan are silhouettes on the horizon.

I chose this one because it makes me laugh.
Taken in our garden in January 2025, a Fieldfare is stomping across frost covered decking, it has one foot raised in the air as if about to bring thudding down on the deck. It has a really grumpy expression on it's face.
It's almost as if it has been mortally insulted and is walking off in high dudgeon.

I've chosen this won because of the tranquillity and beauty of the scene.
This was taken at Stenness on the Eshaness peninsula (North West Mainland of Shetland) in September 2025.
It shows a shingle beach curving around a small bay. At the top of the beach a roofless two story building stands with it's foundations in the shingle (it was built to house equipment and nets for the fishing boats that used to sail from this beach). To the left the dark bulk of Dore Holm (a magnificent sea arch) punctuates the horizon, in the distance the hills of Papa Stour and Shetlands West Mainland line the horizon.

A steam locomotive pulls slowly away from a level crossing heading for a short in the distance. The front of the locomotive is shrouded in steam. Near the mouth of the tunnel a loan figure, partially obscured by the steam, stands watching the progress of the engine.
I really like heritage railways and love the timeless nostalgia of this image.

I called this 'The Watchers'. Four puffins on the Isle of Lunga, Mull, Scotland. They are standing on the edge of a cliff above the camera. The two in the middle have their bodies facing the camera but, their heads turned to the right. the out side pair are side on to the camera, the left hand one is looking to the right, the one on the right is looking back.
I chose this because a) It's Puffins b)the way the light rims the puffins and highlights the sea thrift that grows from the rocks and c) The way the four birds stand out against the bright blue sky... and it's Puffins !

Standing by a drystone wall a derelict and unloved traditional British public phone box (no phone now) dominates this picture of a typical Shetland landscape. A single track road with a rusty cattlegrid snakes into the distance through low, rocky hills towards Voe of Clousta (a sea loch). The dark blue waters of the loch are surrounded by green fields dotted with houses beneath a bright blue sky and fluffy clouds.
I chose this image because it typifies Shetland, which is one of my favourite places, it shows the settlement of Clousta, but could be any one of a hundred settlements that you find when you take a trip off the main road and down one of the side roads.

I chose this simply because it is beautiful... nature at it's finest.
A group of delicate pink and yellow tulips growing in a flower bed. Only one of the flowers is fully open showing purple/ pink petals that turn to yellow about two thirds of the way down. The shot was taken in April so naturally there had been a heavy shower so the flowers and foliage are beaded with water droplets that catch the light.

Black and White. A ruined, two story farmhouse (on the left of the image) stands by the shores of Loch Buie. It still has most of it's slate roof but is otherwise derelict. In front of it a tall, twisted tree stands partially silhouetted against a cloud filled sky, a rope has been slung over one of the branches and it has a boat fender attached to it to create a swing.

In the foreground shingle has pilled up, thrown there by the savage Atlantic storms driving down the length of the loch. In the distance the hills of Mull dominate the Skyline. A weathered, battered tree trunk lies on the shingle.

I chose this image because I'm drawn by the melancholy, moody feel. The house is called Glenbyre and is nearly two miles from the nearest road. It seems to have been once a thriving farm, but it now stands forlorn and abandoned in a beautiful location.

A beautiful stained glass window in the chapel of the castle that was installed to mark the new millennium in the year 2000. Nicola Hopwood's design features the rock on which the castle stands, as well as the meandering River Wye. Three faces symbolise the three parish communities of Goodrich, Marstow and Welsh Bicknor. Down the centre a red ribbon features the phrase "upon this rock" from Matthew 16:18.
I chose this image because of the design of the window and because of the way it casts multicoloured pools of light onto the walls and floor.

A group of three Oak trees standing at the side of an ancient country trackway. I've walked past these trees many times, but this was the first time I'd seen them without foliage. I was struck by the way their beautifully curved and twisted branches seem to waive in the air like sea anemones. I also love how the early morning Spring sunshine casts shadows that emphasise the edges of the branches.

I chose this one because this is a place that I had long wished to visit, in May 2025 I finally made it. This is the Isle of Staffa, which is just off the coast of Mull.
The photo shows the massive basalt columns that the island is famous for and 'Boat Cave' (one of several caves on the island including the world famous Fingal's Cave).
On the horizon and island called 'The Dutchman's Cap can just be made out.
