The discarded head part of a caterpillar after molting or pupating is called the head capsule or face cap. It's the hard, outer part of the head that a caterpillar sheds when it molts to grow larger. The face cap looks like a small, sometimes dark mask or helmet that is shed with the rest of the skin and is typically eaten by the caterpillar for nutrients. It is the "face" from the previous growth stage, and a new face emerges underneath before it is discarded. Caterpillars go through this process multiple times as they grow. This particular face cap was discarded during pupation.
