In view are caterpillars chomping down on milkweed stems which have been set in floral foam. Imagine a sea of half-eaten green leaves with caterpillars amidst the leaves. Caterpillars are yellow, black and white thin stripes around the body.
A low dish inside a monarch cage. The dish is covered with a crochet cover to protect from the standing water and the stems of milkweed are centered and upright.
Fresh greens added to the dish to replenish food.
The bug lofts! I added floral foam to low dishes, placed crochet covers over the top, to prevent bug drownings. Placed stems of milkweed through the mesh to the foam and voila!
These bug condos are furnished with poo paper which is magically changed and a view.

A tiny monarch caterpillar is shown on a green leaf. It's tell tale markings of yellow, black and white stripes around the body tell other bugs, "I am poisonous, leave me alone!" This is a 2nd instar level and about the size of 1 long grain piece of rice.
This 2nd instar is near an area of where it last dined on the leaf leaving a big gaping hole. Now it is just waiting for me to leave before it finishes devouring lunch.
This is a newly hatched 2nd instar. Its colors are not quite as bright yet and still quite small. It is lined up with the vein of the leaf on the underside for camoflauge as it sleeps.
Oh wow, looks like I am going to be very busy this month... fourteen new baby caterpillars I have counted so far in the garden! Holy shnickies!

A monarch butterfly chrysalis closeup as it begins to turn clear right before butterfly emerges. You can see the orange color and the white spots on the wings through the chrysalis.
Chrysalis is still partially green in color but is beginning to turn clear in the middle. You can readily see the golden dots and crown of gold carotinoid material that goes around the right side of the chrysalis.
Chrysalis is almost completely clear. This one will likely emerge first.
The body of the butterfly is visible between the folds of the butterfly's wings while still in the chrysalis. It is still lightly green in color but turning clear fast!
The chrysalids are going clear, butterflies should begin to emerge today/tomorrow.

Amongst the leaves in the mesh nursery one caterpillar rests underneath a large green leaf while a second one is hanging upsidedown from the underside of a leaf in J-hang.
Two caterpillars have decided to hang from the top of the mesh cage itself. In about 24 hours they will shake off their colorful skins and reveal a bright green chrysalis with a gold looking beaded necklace about 1/4 of the way down.
Monarchs have begun to J-hang. This is the final step before they turn into a chrysalis. Takes about 12 - 24 hours for the magic to happen. Then two weeks to wait until they emerge.

A 5 instar monarch cat is having its last outdoor dinner. I will be moving it to a mesh enclosure for the final phase of turning into a chrysalis. I will try to capture the process of going into J hang then into Chrysalis. I will check for OE before release.

The striking colors of a monarch caterpillar resting on a green leaf are in perfect view on this newly hatched 5th instar monarch. The bands of color include bright yellow, black and white which tells other creatures, "I am poisonous, don't eat me!"
This 3rd instar is a little darker thwn normal but the colors still show. It will soon shed this skin and molt into a 4th instar caterpillar. They always look a little ragged before the next molt.
This is a newly hatched 4th instar caterpilar hanging straight down on a leaf. He is in the middle of the bush and was a little hard to capture with the camera.
Another 4th instar caterpillar hanging out at the bottom of a leaf. I expect it too will molt soon as it is not as bright in color.
Critter Check, all 7 accounted for and all looking happy in the milkweed patch!
