Today is National Dictionary Day! The word dictionary comes from Medieval Latin, specifically dictionarium, a collection of words. An Englishman named John of Garland invented the word in 1220 with his book Dictionarius, written to help with Latin "diction."

This day honours one of our southern neighbours, a lexicographer at the centre of spelling reform. He believed that English rules were unnecessarily complicated, so part of his programme was introducing American spellings in his dictionary. Hope he got a big cheque for it. #NationalDictionaryDay 📚
