Wild Spood Ani: Her web design has become more complex with supporting strands strategically placed for maximum strength and prey trapping area. #wildspoodani #wildspood #spiders #neoscona #crucifera #orbweavers

A large tan-colored, orb-weaving spider with red legs is struggling with a partially silk-wrapped wheel bug. From this angle, the spider is almost completely eclipsed by the struggling wheel bug. They are dangling in a tattered web against a black background.

“Who’s in charge now?” If asked, I’d affirm the wheel bug, #Arilus cristatus, as the top predator in my yard. A recent encounter w/ one of the many cross #orbweavers, #Neoscona crucifera, in my yard reminded me that the tables can, and do, turn. #Arachtober #spider #Reduviidae #Araneidae #arachnid
A large orbweaver spider viewed through its web. It has yellow spots on its abdomen & black bands on its legs.
Spider season is here in So Cal! The kids have named this beauty “Tiger,” & we have to watch where we walk to avoid the massive orb-web that stretches across the front of our house. #Neoscona #InverteFest
Male and female orbweaver spiders with brown/orange bodies covered with a fringe of spiky hairs embrace while hanging from a single silken strand against a dark background.
#Spider #mating or a midnight snack? There's both a male & a female orbweaver (perhaps #Neoscona crucifera) in there. I think it's more #marriage than mealtime mayhem as they were suspended from a single silken strand.
A photo of a tan orbweaver spider hanging in her web at night. HEr body is covered in tiny spine-like hairs. The spider's front pair of legs, slender are tucked up close to her body. Her pedipalps hang below her face, her eyes, small and dark. arrayed around the front of her prosoma (the front part of her body) Her opisthosoma, the rear part of her body is rotund. Her rear most pair of legs are raised above her body, almost like horns. Her web shines in the dark around her, reflecting the light of the flash.
A photo of the spider's web. She rests in the center, the geometric perfection of the web spiraling around her, shining in the night, a neighbor's house is out of focus behind her.
Here's another shot of the Spotted #Orbweaver, #Neoscona crucifera that I really like. Also a shot of part of her VERY large web (easily 8 feet across, I need a wider macro lens to capture it 😂)

A photo of an orange orbweaver spider sitting in her web at night. Her body is covered in many fine tan hair-like scales. The spider has a large round opisthosoma, the rear part of the spider, which is orange, and 2 faint rows of dark dots on either side of the middle line. Her legs are slender and rusty orange/brown. Her prosoma, the forebody, is a lighter shade, the hairs making it almost yellow, and her small dark eyes are clustered around the front. The camera flash has captured her web, which stands out in white against the darkness

And please eat all the bitey buggies, thanks. 😁

A photo of a tan and gray orbweaver spider from the front as it rests in its web at night, feeding on a red and black 2 lined spittle bug, Prosapia bicincta. The spider's slender front legs are held around her head, around her prey and are covered in many tiny grayish tan hairs and feature larger spine-like hairs. Her chonky opisthosoma (her abdomen) is also covered in these hairs and is marked with reticulated white black markings and tiny reddish brown spots. Her prosoma, front part of the body, is also covered in the fine grayish tan hairs, her eyes are small and glossy black Her web shows up nicely against the dark background, a bonus of shooting spiders at night.
A photo of the spider's underside, showing that her opisthosoma is covered in fine hairs and has a reddish center with white spots on either side. Her spinnerets are dark brown, and the body of the spittlebug is better visible in this shot.
Another photo of the spider from the above front, the background in this photo is two-toned gray, but the web and spider still contrast nicely.
Some more photos of the Spotted #Orbweaver, #Neoscona Crucifera who guards my front porch and protects me from those annoying halfling jewel thieves...
