Next month I’m visiting 2 archives for the 1st time - the Wallace Collection & the British Museum. I’ve been to the BM before but not used their library. Will research Sir Richard Wallace & hope to view the #Sudbourne part of the John Nordern map c1600 below #OnePlaceLandowners #OnePlaceWednesday

The #Sudbourne Estate & its #OnePlaceLandowners were integral to villagers’ lives. Many would’ve been employed on the Estate. Sudbourne Hall was demolished in 1953, but a few buildings remain - bothy buildings, stables & seed house. Some are private homes, others artists studios #OnePlaceWednesday

Further to last week’s post, I’ve heard back from The Wallace Collection - they do have some #Sudbourne information, & I’m planning to go there next month to look at them! Bit late for #OnePlaceLandowners, but the prompt inspired me! #OnePlaceWednesday

The Wallace Collection Discover exceptional paintings, sculpture, ceramics, furniture and arms and armour, gifted to Britain in 1900, in a historic London house museum.

Sir Richard’s art collection can be seen at The Wallace Collection. I couldn’t find any references to #Sudbourne in their online catalog but I’ve emailed them to ask if they hold any information on the village

Sir Richard Wallace

Does anyone else have a favourite landowner? I do! He was a great philanthropist, did a lot of good on his estate, & bequeathed his art collection to the nation. It’s in London & I can’t wait to visit! I suspect he was the villagers’ favourite landowner too #OnePlaceWednesday #OnePlaceLandowners

As it’s nearly August (how did that happen?!?), here’s a #OnePlaceWednesday reminder of our next Blogging Prompt. Take a look at your #OnePlaceLandowners – who they were, what they owned, how they used and maintained their property, who their tenants were, and how things changed over time.

I should really be researching THIS month’s prompt #OnePlaceCourtCases but I’ve wanted to research #Sudbourne #OnePlaceLandowners for a while, so this week I indulged myself with a quick bit of landowners research. Might have to write about them separately as there’s a lot to say! #OnePlaceWednesday
