Complementary to our work on #ClimateChange and #phenology of Lathraea squamaria #Orobanchaceae, we have now published a longer paper on the morphology and anatomy of this #ParasiticPlant across different stages of its life cycle.
The paper is under full open access for the next 50 days!

The hemiparasitic nature of Rhinanthus minor (yellow rattle) is exploited by horticulturists wanting to create wildflower meadows. This annual species is a parasite of grasses and slows their too-vigorous growth, allowing wildflowers to thrive. #parasite #Orobanchaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Flowers of Pedicularis (680 spp across the N. Hemisphere) have a galea (a crazy, hood-shaped or tubular structure formed by the fused apices of the 2 upper petals). The flowers are mostly pollinated by bumblebees. 📷: Pedicularis davidii Ed Shaw CCBYNC2 #Orobanchaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Melampyrum pratense has a huge distribution across Europe to central Siberia thanks to ants. It has myrmecochorus seeds—seeds carried by ants—unlike most holo- and hemiparasitic species, which have wind-dispersed seeds. #parasite #Orobanchaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
Photo of a pair of small, conical, dense inflorescences emerging from the soil. The bracts are dark purple; the tubular flowers are purple with yellow throats. Photo by Scott Zona CCBYNC2.
Orobanche cooperi is another holoparasitic Orobanchaceae from southwestern North America. Isn’t it fantastic? A bad-ass beauty! #parasite #Orobanchaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Holoparasites are those plants that take water (+ minerals) AND sugars from their hosts. These plants lack both roots and chlorophyll, so they are wholly dependent on their hosts. This is the magnificent Lathraea clandestina. #parasite #Orobanchaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Neobartsia mutica is another hemiparasite. It has a broad distribution across South America (I recently saw it in the Andes of Peru). Like so many of these hemiparasites, it has showy flowers. This one may be adapted to hummingbird pollination. #parasite #Orobanchaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Let’s look at some of the hemiparasites in the family. This is Seymeria pectinata. The leafy green shoots look like any regular plant. What we don’t see are the root haustorial connections by which it steals water & minerals from its hosts. #parasite #Orobanchaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Rehmannia (the only member of its tribe) & Lindenbergia (in another monotypic tribe) are NOT parasites. The rest of the family is hemiparasitic (=green & photosynthetic, but taking water & minerals from its host) or wholly parasitic. 📷: R. piasezkii #Orobanchaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Canadian Lousewort or Wood Betony has beautifully incised leaves. It is a hemiparasite, like other members of the plant family Orobanchaceae #canadianlousewort #woodbetony #orobanchaceae #wildflowers #waynecounty
To the left and in the background: an ivy-covered wall. Centre front: A large inflorescence of “meat coloured” Ivy-Broomrape. Inbetween: Three smaller inflorescences of broomrape. Also seen: green Geranium leaves, withered ivy leaves. Weather: somewhat overcast, with only indirect sunlight.

Planted by the late UC Berkeley professor Bob Ornduff, Orobanche hederae is an obligate parasite on ivy. Apparently Bob didn’t like the ivy on the Berkeley campus, but it hasn’t made a dent — they’re both thriving. #ucberkeley #orobanchaceae #parasiticplant
finally came across a native WA #Orobanchaceae! #Buchnera ramosissima or linearis! Very exciting! Not much info on these plants, but growing in close proximity to grass I’m guessing that must be a preference! Other species tho are known to parasitise trees, but these species can live independently
I pulled a stray #Hedera helix (🇬🇧 Ivy 🇩🇰 Vedbend) and this is what I found. Could it be the subterranean part of an #Orobanche hederae (🇬🇧 Ivy Broomrape 🇩🇰 Vedbend-Gyvelkvæler)?

Parasitic weeds! #Bellardia viscosa! Weedy #Orobanchaceae are all to common around granite outcrops! I wonder what their impacts are to the plants on these habitats 🧐
Check out this new monograph of the parasitic genus Lathraea (toothworts) in #Orobanchaceae led by Sebastian Hatt - looks like an excellent piece of work.
