Spotted this beautifully hairy #owlfly (Acmonotus incusifer) this week.

One of the Split-eyed Owlflies, it seems this isn't a commonly observed species. There are only 5 observations in #inaturalist with all of those in Western Australia.

A mass of dark-brown, newly-emerged owlfly larvae resting atop each another like open-jawed shingles protecting their empty eggshells which ring the stalk that supports the group. Taken in the mountains south of Tucson Arizona in August 2018.

Brown and tan speckled owlfly larva, with open jaws, it is ringed by a frilly fringe of abdominal projections and sits along the midrib of a moist tropical leaf at La Selva in Costa Rica in 1994.
