A large woodpecker is gripping the smooth bark of a dead tree with holes pecked by woodpeckers to extract carpenter ants.
The bird is mostly black with a big white stripe on his face and a bright red crest. Here he - adult males have the red crest - is seen in left-face profile. Behind, above, and below is blue sky.
