Kestral with wings open. He's sitting on a sisal-covered, arched perch. He has leather jesses attached to his leg. His face has vertical black stripes; one under and one behind his eye. His cap, tail and body are brown, with bars across the tail feathers. The underside of his spread wings are soft brown along the top and pale buff below, on the longer feathers. Those are barred, also. His perch sits on a table and there's a stripped log column behind him. Taken at the Dalles Visitors Center in Oregon.
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #WingsOpenNotFlying. I hate to go back to my kestrel friend so soon but he is literally the only bird I have that fits the criteria. I could sit today out but he's just so pretty.

An American Kestrel sits on his comfy perch. His facial markings, 2 black, vertical bars on each side, one under the eye & one over the ear, are striking. His body has brown feathers barred with black on the top and tawny vertical bars on a pale brown belly/chest. His small beak is very sharp and his intense black eyes are staring us down. Really, though, he was a sweetheart.
Found this picture of a kestrel I met at the visitor's center at The Dalles, OR. Offering it for #BirdoftheDay and the theme #staredown. He was a permanent resident, couldn't be released due to injury. First kestrel I ever saw; I fell in love!

Nothing like an accipiter drive-by to stop the fights over whether the song sparrow gets to monopolize the feeder or not.
Song sparrow was trying to intimidate the spotted towhee (who was ignoring him) at the time.
Juncos were probably rooting for the hawk, which missed.

A great horned owl (patchy brown owl with prominent ears) perches on a small branch in front of the trunks of Douglas fir trees. The owl is framed by another branch with smaller mossy branches hanging down. The owl appears to be looking at the viewer. Right eye mostly open; left eye closed.
They say when both eyes are on you it pierces your soul, so I guess we are lucky that this Great Horned Owl is still opening them.
