Let’s not forget the cyanogenic glycosides that the Zebra longwing butterfly (Heliconius charithonia) gets from its host, Passiflora spp. Here it is ovipositing on P. suberosa. #Passifloraceae #Aposematism #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
P.Damsel's Delight (passiflora hybrid) - flowering outside in a large pot against a south facing window
P.Grandioso (tacsonia hybrid) grafted on P.caerulea - just started producing new leaves in the polytunnel
P.colinvauxii (decaloba species) - growing in a hanging basket in the polytunnel over winter
P.insignis (tacsonia species) - a young plant moved to the polytunnel over winter

Passiflora sanguinolenta anomaly.
Strange site on top of the Orangery.
Something has gone wrong with this flower from P.sanguinolenta !
Could this be an instance of fasciation ?
All the other flowers appear ok so far.

P.pinnatistipula - finally produced a flower after many aborted buds dating back to June 2025
P.pinnatistipula - finally produced a flower after many aborted buds dating back to June 2025. This is too high up in the apple tree to pollinate!
My first P.pinnatistipula flower!
Grown from a PSI seed (EUR) and planted in the ground inside the greenhouse 3 years ago it has extended high into the apple tree to produce the first flower.

Piriqueta cistoides subsp. caroliniana has cyanogenic leaves & flowers. The flowers last only 1 day, so putting cyanogenic glycosides in their tissues seems wasteful, especially when N is usually limiting. Even fallen flowers are HCN+. ☠️ #HCN #Passifloraceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
Photo of three Japanese beetles on the leaves of Passiflora incarnata. The leaves show extensive evidence of herbivory. Photo by Scott Zona CCBYNC2.
Popillia japonica (Japanese Beetle) feeds with impunity on Passiflora incarnata. The beetle either lacks a glucosidase digestive enzyme OR sequesters the glycoside to prevent HCN release. Just shows you that no plant defense is perfect! ☠️ #HCN #Passifloraceae #Coleoptera #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
If I were to add a few drops of β-glucosidase enzyme to the left vial with P. incarnata, the HCN would be liberated & the paper would turn blue. [If this photo looks familiar, it’s because I posted it a couple of weeks ago during Passiflora week.] #Passifloraceae

Photo of leaves of a vine and a single flower. The flower has a corona of long, filamentous segments that are reddish. Photo by Scott Zona CCBYNC2.
I’ve spent the week talking about Passiflora & haven’t mentioned the corona! It’s the whorl of spikey-looking bits in this flower of P. jussieui. Like the coronas of daffodils (Narcissus spp), it is an outgrowth of the perianth & presumably attractive to pollinators. #Passifloraceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
Close-up photo of a single flower. The sepals and petals are narrow and white. The corona is short and greenish. The androgynophore (the stalk holding the sexual parts) is long. There are five down-facing anthers and three stigmas.
A few species of Passiflora are bat-pollinated. This is one of them: Passiflora mucronata from Brazil.
What? You were expecting something all black and goth? 📷: Flávio Mendes CCBYNC4 #Passifloraceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Photo of a hand cradling a flowering shoot. The flowers are dark red, with small greenish coronas, and very long, exserted stalks holding the sexual parts. Photo by Scott Zona CCBYNC2.
Pollination in Passiflora is so interesting. The genus is believed to be ancestrally bee-pollinated, but hummingbird pollination has evolved several times. 1st 📷: Passiflora membranacea. 2nd 📷: Passiflora perfoliata. #hummingbird #pollination #TropicalBotany #Passifloraceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
Photo of two leaves and two small glass vials. In each vile, a bit of leaf tissue is at the bottom of the vial and a strip of paper is suspended from the lid. In the left vial, the paper is bright blue. It’s white in the right vial. Photo by Scott Zona CCBYNC2.
Passiflora has cyanogenic glycosides that release cyanide when exposed to an enzyme. Feigl-Anger test strips turn blue with HCN. Passiflora suberosa (R) leaves have the glycoside + enzyme. Passiflora incarnata (L) leaves have the glycoside but lack the enzyme. #HCN #Passifloraceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
: Close-up photo of bilobed leaves. Each lobe has a silvery midvein. Between the two midveins are a scattering of yellow spots. Photo by Scott Zona CCBYNC2.
Heliconiini butterfly larvae (Heliconius & kin) have a taste for Passiflora, which has evolved several lines of defense, including this one: Spots on P. boenderi that resemble butterfly eggs & making the leaves appear “occupied” so that gravid females look elsewhere. #Passifloraceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
Photo of a hand cradling a shoot of the vine. Some leaves are elliptical, while others are 3-lobed. Photo by Scott Zona CCBYNC2.
Photo of a selection of isolated leaves. Some leaves are entire, some are lobed. Some leaves are large, some are small and narrow. Photo by Scott Zona CCBYNC2.
Passiflora suberosa exhibits heteroblasty (different-shaped leaves on the same plant). The 2nd photo shows leaves from a single plant. It’s part of the evolutionary arms race with butterflies. It may prevent gravid female butterflies from forming a search image. #Passifloraceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
Photo of a leafy branch of a woody plant bearing white flowers with yellow coronas. Other potted plants are visible in the background. Photo by Scott Zona CCBYNC2.
Passiflora includes a few trees & shrubs, which, not surprisingly, lack tendrils. This is P. emarginata, a tree found in deciduous forests of Colombia. This one was cultivated in a glasshouse at RBG Kew. #Passifloraceae #TropicalBotany #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
In Bogotá curubas like to just casually hang around//Se me olvidaba que en Bogotá mis plantas favoritas crecen por ahí sin ninguna preocupación en el mundo #Passifloraceae

Passiflora is a genus of over 600 spp., 95% of which are native to the Americas (5% Australasia). They are mostly lianas with tendrils (which are modified shoots); leaves have glands; flowers have a stalked stamens + ovary (androgynophore). This is P. bahamensis. #Passifloraceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
