When writing haiku for kids, I tend to stick to the 5-7-5 syllable form. For teaching purposes, it's just easier to explain. Now, you could argue that a traditional haiku deals with nature and not sport. But what's more natural than baseball in spring?

Poem text: The Green Submarine Captain Kim dived down deep into the ocean, In her green submarine called ‘The Gherkin in Motion’. Weaving past whales with the help of Mate Stu, Who steered the sub like a foot guides a shoe. The Gherkin sped on ‘til it reached the sea bed. From a map in her lap, Captain Kim calmly read: “At the Great Anchor, turn sharply north-west.” Mate Stu said “Aye aye!” and pressed on with their quest. Past anglerfish, tuna and even a shark, They gunned for a tunnel disguised by the dark. The sub reappeared in a shower of light, As before them appeared a fabled delight. The green submarine was a craft full of glee: A glittering city submerged by the sea! Their eyes bulged out wide like a great Praying Mantis. Captain Kim and Mate Stu had discovered Atlantis!

Taking another trip on the Dirigible Balloon with the (decidedly not sky-bound) Green Submarine!

The Goaltender I wish I were an octopus I’d have eight arms to use No puck would slip or slide by me My team would never lose No slap shot, snap shot, or backhand Would ever reach the net And even on a breakaway I’d neutralize the threat The fans would chant and cheer my name The sports writers would rave “Just give her team the Walter Cup She always makes the save!” ‘Cause just like the Green Monster who Plays for the Boston Fleet I’d be a mighty goalie that No one could ever beat

A poem for kids inspired by the heroics of Aerin Frankel of Team USA's Women's Hockey Team (not to mention goalie of the Boston Fleet).
