A small green pokeweed plant with still immature yet very toxic red berries.
Used to be hundreds of pokeweeds in the yard during 20 years of neglect. It was one of the few native plants that could stand up to the invasive privet, English ivy, and wisteria. I allowed two survivors this year.

Photo montage of steps on Central Park South showing a pokeweed plant with berries within easy reach. The text is from Wikipedia and says โpokeweed berries, produced by the plant phytlolacca Americana, are toxic to humans and can cause serious health issues if ingested. While they are a food source for some birds, all parts of the pokeweed plant are considered poisonous, especially the berries when eaten raw.โ
Strolling #CentralPark South yesterday and ventured into the Park.
Can you spot the delicious blueberries within easy reach of a curious toddler? Silly you, not blueberries. Native #pokeweed, and theyโll send that kid to the hospital.
Get to know your locals! Birds love these. Humans vomit andโ
A messy clump of plants full of bright color. On the left are several pokeweed plants with wine-red stems and black berries. Their green leaves are beginning to droop and wither. On the right, a cluster of goldenrods towers over the pokeweed, their bright yellow blooms glowing in the sunshine.
Oddly, the tree leaves haven't really started turning here yet. But the goldenrod and pokeweed offer some pretty autumn color in their place.

"Polk Salad Annie" is a 1968 song written and performed by #TonyJoeWhite. Its lyrics describe the lifestyle of a poor rural #Southern girl and her family. Traditionally, the term to describe the type of food highlighted in the song is polk or poke salad, a dish of cooked greens made from #pokeweed.

Pretty. Birds eat them. But poisonous to human and pets. American pokeweed. Also known as dragonberry, inkberry, pokeberry, poke sallet and pigeonberryweed.

#Pokeweed Birds love the berries. All parts of the plant, including these delicious looking berries, are toxic for humans and most other animals.
Pokeweed looks like elderberry, but itโs toxic and left me with blistering rashes. Donโt confuse the two. ๐ฟ Stay safe around wild plants.

Common Pokeweed! This weed is toxic to both humans and livestock. I spotted this behind the house we were in near McMillian, Michigan. Love the U.P.! #pokeweed

Today I learned that there's such a thing as a pokeweed sawfly (Allantus basilaris). I clearly don't spend enough time around toxic plants. So obscure that I can't find a good photo of the tiny thing. Here's my crap one.

Eastern bluebird and pokeweed. Bluebirds eat a lot of fruit in the fall and winter time, including pokeweed berries! We are lucky to have both these lovely species right here on the farm

What they don't tell you about American pokeweed (Phytolacca americana).......is just how gorgeous it is. Those bright pink stems are NOT photoshopped, this is how bright they are with the naked eye. Stands out from a mile away. #NativePlants #Pokeweed #Mississippi #USflora #MSflora
Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana), growing to block the gate to our dog fence. When it grows where it doesn't belong, it becomes food.
After boiling (twice) and straining, the Poke can be added to the stir fry at the end. It doesn't really need additional cooking.
Heart vegan stir fry, with Poke, Winecap Mushrooms,b and veggie burger, over mashed potatoes. Delicious.
Poke stir-fry! Poke is more tender and subtle than broccoli, but more flavorful and substantive than spinach. It is absolutely packed with nutrients, even after boiling twice. It takes some processing, because it's toxic raw.

This is a photo of unripe American Pokeweed berries just beginning to develop out of the early blossoms. The berries are a brilliant emeraldy green, coming out of pinkish white flowers on thin pink hued stems. They look like tiny little pumpkins. The background is one of the giant green leaves of the pokeweed plant.
I've been remiss in my #JanuArty posts. For today's prompt, #green , here are some unripe #Pokeweed #berries

Struggling to hold onto that. The 20th is filling me & my friends w/existential dread. I dream of Bob Marley, think of him often. ONE LOVE. Sending all best energies to US for strength; hold fast; resist.
This is a nasty Poke weed with berries that are toxic to humans but not to birds. Got rid of it as soon as we found out since kids might pick and eat the berries. #pokeweed #toxic #birds
