The deep-sea #Porifera 🧽 taxonomy workshop at @mnhn.fr Paris is now completed! 14 students and >400 specimens processed. The aim was to train a new generation of sponge #taxonomists and advance studies of New Caledonia's biodiversity. Collections were also digitized to make data accessible online.

A scanning electron microscope (SEM) image showing a tiny silica structure, so-called spicule, of the type anisochaela. Spicules are present in sponge tissue and are used for the identification to species for example. This spicule is elongated with a rosette of “flaps”, a narrow stem in the middle and a thickened, rounded end - looking a bit like a tree. Typical for SEM it is a greyscale image.
