#Termites in #Guelph are "back".

Discontinued monitoring doesn't mean the problem is gone.

It means you don't know where, & how large, new populations are.

#ZOO2700 students learned this last year.

Hiring a former city employee back as a contractor is not a good look.

We're talking glass sponges in #ZOO2700 and spending a lot of time talking about the incredible legacy of Henry Reiswig

We overlapped briefly when I started my PhD at McGill and my main takeaways were his kindness and enthusiasm.

I’m going to LOVE adding this next part of the story to #ZOO2700 in January!

Robert Macfarlane’s new book asks a question he couldn’t ignore: Is a river alive? The author and naturalist visited three rivers (including one in Canada) to explore what it means to give the waterways the same rights as people

Really enjoyed this article by Emily Donaldson in the @theglobeandmail.com and I can’t wait to read #IsARiverAlive by @robgmacfarlane.bsky.social . I use his #TheLostWords in #ZOO2700

SUCH an AMAZING resource that @drcraigmc.bsky.social and colleagues have released! πŸŽ‰

Excited for the public release of body size data for so many marine taxa - can't wait to see all the creative applications!

I'm immediately making questions for #ZOO2700 & #ZOO3700!

I LOVE this SO MUCH

Adding this video to the moment from dive 802 into future #ZOO2700 classes

Thank you @schmidtocean.bsky.social, @oceancensus.bsky.social & collaborators 4 sharing and archiving these important moments of discovery showing how open & collaborative discoveries r made!

Another example of sharing discovery was this first view of the #monoplacophoran Neopilina galatheaeΒ
made by @schmidtocean.bsky.social

One #ZOO2700 student made this meme during the final exam to commemorate, "It's a monoplac! It's a monoplac!"

We used the live @schmidtocean.bsky.social feeds so often this year in #ZOO2700 -

Thanks to them again for archiving the live dives so students can share in the excitement of the exact moments of discovery!!

Animal phylogeny where tips are phyla. Histogram on right hand side (log-scale) of the number of named species in that phylum (blue) and whether that phylum contained a student's favourite species at the start (red) or end of the term (yellow). Sponges grabbed people's imagination this year and likely the start of term enthusiasm for "cephalochordata" was misplaced enthusiasm for Cephalopods.

Phylogeny produced in R by adapting code from Casey Dunn's https://bitbucket.org/caseywdunn/animal-genomes/src/master/

To track hoped-for shifts in engagement towards previously under-appreciated taxa, we ask the #ZOO2700 students at the start and the end of their intro to #invertebrate morphology & evolution term about their favorite #species of invertebrate and to which phylum it belongs. @sherihincks.bsky.social

Sea spider collected by Schmidt Oceans on March 2nd 2025 on their dive of the South Sandwich Islands expedition with Ocean Census. "We are currently off of the East side of Montagu Island, one of the of the most remote volcanic island chains in the world. We intend to drop into a site that is around 620m deep at the bottom of an incline with potential steep walls towards the end of the dive. We will survey the geology of the features on the side of the island before proceeding up the β€œhill” collecting specimens as we go. "

Preparing to talk about #Osedax bone-eating #worms next week in #ZOO2700 and checking a link I'd created in previous years that allowed for students to access all the public COI sequences in NIH’s #NCBI nucleotide database.....

This is the view today.

screen grap from the Schimdt Oceans sampling at Spaatz Island Antarctica of an ornate, polycheate annelid worm before it was sampled. Might be from the family Aphroditidae. Long shiny copper-coloured spiny-hairs line the sides of the body. beautiful! at ~640 m deep.
