At our #Morphology Meetings we established a keynote award to enable early career researchers to make first experience with having keynote talks. This year Paul Kalke won this prize and presented his work on the evolution of palps in #annelids at #MM#26. Congratulations!

This is an image of a worm, curled over on a black background. It is pale glistening blue with a front section that is strikingly red in comparison. Both ends are pointed. It is a previously undescribed bristle worm from the Glyceridae family (bloodworms). These animals are mostly predatory and inject venom into their prey using specialized teeth. This image shows three beautiful orange-yellow-brown coloured worms on a black background. The left and right ones have curly shapes emanating from each segment. The one in the middle is pointier with shorter, straighter bristles coming out of it. They all have bristles – looking like antennae - coming out of their heads. They are Amblyosyllis madeirensis, a bristle worm first described on Madeira (Portugal). Photo thanks to: Arne Nygren in Aguado et al. (2019), https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0214211

Treasure trove of data: #EuroWorm project!

Species are disappearing at an alarming rate. To advance the discovery of new species & understanding of global #BioDiversity, researchers are building an openly accessible dataset on European marine worms: www.uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html... #Annelids

How does fertilisation differ between land- and water-based #annelids? Having to evolve a new system certainly opens up a window for high levels of haploid competition between gametes.

I have three #annelids from our collection that aren't really IDed (beyond sabellid, probably Hirundo and Echiuran). Does Bluesky have anyone with an idea for a better ID and/or what details would be needed for that?

Ok don't hate on me but those look more like segmented worms #Annelids than C. elegans! :)

Today in #ZOO2700, was deep-sea hydrothermal vent #annelids!

One highlight was this paper on animal under the seafloor doi.org/10.1038/s414...

AND to then be able share the footage of the exact moment of discovery via @schmidtocean.bsky.social ! WOW!

It’s all in the eyes! The eye arrangement in freshwater leeches is key to separating organisms into families. How many eyes are present? Where are they located?
