Vertical close-up black-and-white macro shot of a tree trunk. The photo focusing on the texture of the tree's rugged, layered bark and highlights a central knot or hole, that looks like an eye. I'm trying to show the organic patterns shaped by time and but also render them somewhat abstract, so that the final image actually does look like an eye!

I have two today for #UrbanGaze #photograph. This one also hits #PostProcess #TonalShift. Photo taken at a crossroad in California, near Joshua Tree National Park. Dust devil 😈 in action. Added a combo of noir and vivid warm filters, turned up the definition and sharpness a bit. Nature in charge 🌬️

I first switched to monochrome, and applied a some filters to clear up haze and sharpen the landscape to bring out the details of the rocks. I also applied an overall slightly red hue, since both colors I was aiming for would have significant red in them.

I then masked both the sky and landscape so I could adjust each separately. I adjusting some lighting paramaters (contrast, highlights, shadows, etc.) for each befor turning to color.

For this part, I separately adjusted the red, blue and green curves to get the shades I was looking for. This was a very interesting and educational exercise for me, as I know practically nothing about color theory! Overall the colors are intentionally very dramatic, perhaps in reaction to posting so many monochrome images the last couple of days. The colors are also much more saturated than colors on Mars are in real life; but also, I thought, more fun to produce.

For my try at this challenge, I had an idea similar to Rock's, and tried to imagine this scene on (an idealized) Mars. My goal was to get a butterscotch sky and a brick-red landscape. All processing done in Lightroom; see alt text for details.

A high-angle, black-and-white photograph of the Grand Canyon. The image captures the vast scale of the canyon with dramatic lighting that emphasizes the jagged ridges and deep shadows of the rock formations. In the distance, a flat horizon line meets a clear sky, while a winding trail is visible in the darker foreground. The high contrast between the brightly lit plateaus and the shadowed crevices highlights the geological layers and textures of the landscape.

Thanks for the Challenge!

All Lightroom -
Took overall exposure down
Luminance mask to raise exposure on brightest rocks
Darkened sky /linear gradient
Cropped to emphasize rock structures left and center
plus some basic tonal adjustments

A color photo of the Grand Canyon. The canyon is lightened up so the tops of peaks look almost white. The lower parts are a soft red. There aren't deep shadows in the crevices. The sky is a soft blue with a pinkish haze at the horizon.

A softer color edit. I'm usually into a lot of shadows and dark tones, but I decided to lighten up here. Edited in Apple Photos and Google Photos.

Thanks for the homework!

After conversion in Topaz I made adjustments to WB, White & Black levels and added some grain. I couldn't open the DNG in Capture One, Paintshop Pro or and older version of LR.

A black and white landscape photo of the Grand Canyon. Using Snapseed, I converted it to black and white. Sharpened the photo and cropped it. I added a tiny bit of purple to the black for the distant landscape and a sepia tone in the landscape in the foreground. In my mind I was thinking of a horseback rider from the 1800's finally reaching this vista. I gave the photo a look of that era of photography and coloring.

After cropping, in photoshop i went Image > Adjustments > Black & white
then i used topaz labs Adjust- exposure Correction
back to adjustment > curves, to give it a nice S shape
adjustment > Exposure to bump the gamma up a little, dial back exposure a hair
adjustment > levels, to fix the clipping
resize 2160x1440

Very kind of you, Robyn, TY.

Tbh, I prefer my first #PostProcess cropped version. It was abstract, blue, furry, and fuzzy, lol, almost like a weird macro shot of a hairy spider's gaping blue maw (mouth) and hairy legs. 😆 But then, I'm a sucker for the Rorschach aspects of abstract photography. 💙

I edited this in Photoshop. I brought up the contrast and increased the reddish glow to look more like it is later in the day. I put in a black/transparent gradient at the bottom to hide the protruding rocks and to additionally make it look later in the day. I put in a different sky, also to fit more with the feeling of dusk.

A photograph of the Grand Canyon which has been edited to appear it could have been taken at dusk.

The image overall had the exposure shifted down, black point and shadows darkened, and clarity slightly sharpened. Two further linear gradient masks were added in Affinity's Development Studio. The first starts slightly below the upper edge of the frame and ends within the more orange-tone section of the canyon's side. The second runs from the bottom up into the orange-toned area.

The upper mask was initially aimed at adding some drama to the sky with colour, but was extended into the canyon edge eventually. The white balance was heavily tinted purple, but left on the warm side. The result is deep purple at the top, but the canyon still has the interesting oranges that over saturating it pulled up.

The white balance in the lower mask was shifted significantly cooler and the tint adjusted towards purples. Exposure and shadows were also heavily lowered.

The development masks stack on top of any other edits made to the overall master image, but are gradients so the effects are most significant at the upper and lower edges of the frame in this case. The orange section is going to have some level of interference from the master edits and both mask layers as they overlap slightly.

A split-field monochrome interpretation of the Grand Canyon, originally photographed by @rjrock.bsky.social, processed in ON1 with a wet plate texture and low-key tonal treatment. Created in response to a brief to remove the colour — high key, low key, noir, cyanotype, platinum — where does your eye go? The bilateral symmetry creates a landscape that feels lost in time, like an old postcard of a place that doesn't exist, but might.
