The Durham Ox, prior to becoming the much extended Six Hills Hotel in the 50’s, and seen here as a Lichfield Brewery house so this is probably pre-1935. The pub sits at a crossing of the Fosse Way and another lesser Roman road from Long Clawson to the river at Barrow on Soar.

A brick wall with many framed black and white photographs of former occupants of the pub where the gallery now hangs and of the tiny village in Surrey near the Kent border. The photos are lit by overhead lamps. A red leather armchair is placed beneath the gallery.

The wall in our local pub, dedicated to photographs depicting the history of the place and the small village in Surrey, where it has been the focus of social life for almost 150 years.

Fantastic presentation by @thegozfather.bsky.social this morning in the @sogorg.bsky.social's series of talks about Court Records.

A great tip about using Exchequer records to learn more about pubs (as they were used to host Country depositions).

THIS WAS 1981.

A pint cost about 59p. Splashing out in the lounge meant paying an extra 2p, a decision not to be taken lightly.

The Five Miles From Anywhere, No Hurry Inn, formerly the Lord Nelson, Upware, Cambridgeshire.

This photo was taken prior to the thatched roof being covered with corrugated iron in the 1890’s. The pub was badly damaged by fire in 1956, the current pub dates from a rebuild 1980.

In late 80s/ earliest 90s Lincolnshire there were two local ale houses. Actual houses where the owners went down to the cellar to the casks and came up with the jug of beer. There were 2-3 tables in the front room. Anyone got a more recent example of this type of boozer? #PubHistory

The Bath Inn, Nottingham, today. An inquest into the death of my 3x GGF took place in this pub, in 1897. He lived at 7 Bath Street with his daughter, Clara and died shortly after he had a fall in the house. He was in his 80s. #PubHistory #FamilyHistory

Fascinating in lots of ways - including Lovecraft’s wife Sonia demonstrating that the Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub in Fleet Street was already a tourist trap by the 1930s! #lovecraft #pubhistory

Image of The Ship Inn, which is located just across the High Street from the Bridge Inn, where Louise Philippe stayed when he escaped out of France. In 1824 the publican of the Ship Inn was convicted for leaving soldiers of the 12th Lancers out in the cold. He had refused to get out of bed to let them in! The pub now advertises Sky sports.

The White Hart, just down the High Street from The Ship Inn. This building looks like a classic pub, with light brick bottom half, arched windows, and red brick upper floor. It has been moved back from its original location to allow cars on the High Street. It was the site of a food riot in 1795 when soldiers of the Oxfordshire Militia mutinied and raided local establishments of their grain

Home from a sunny, but chilly trial run of a walking tour for Newhaven, E. Sussex. We decided the local pubs needed a few history snippets! Now looking at anecdotes of pubs as locations of town business, places to billet soldiers and auction shipwreck materials. #PubHistory
