How Strategic Oil Reserves Are Being Used to Stabilize Prices Amid the Iran War In response to the Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has cut off about 20% of the world's oil supply, the International Energy Agency announced the largest coordinated release of strategic oil reserves in history. Starting in late March 2026, 32 countries will release a total of 412 million barrels over four months to mitigate supply disruptions and stabilize global oil prices. The United States is contributing 172 million barrels, nearly half of the total, which will temporarily reduce its Strategic Petroleum Reserve to its lowest level since the early 1980s. Strategic reserves were first created to secure emergency oil supplies, dating back to the U.S. Navy’s early 20th-century fuel stockpiles.
