U.S. House Passes Legislation to Reauthorize the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative This week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed The American Water Stewardship Act (H.R. 6422), legislation that reauthorizes critical regional watershed initiatives through 2031, including the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. Without reauthorization, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is set to expire at the end of September 2026. Call for good practices in sustainable management and restoration of agricultural lands and soils The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that 1.66 billion hectares of land are degraded due to human impacts, with over 60% occurring on agricultural land. Given that 95% of food production relies on healthy soil and land, it is urgent to restore these areas and adopt sustainable management practices. Grasslands, pasturelands, and rangelands cover about 54% of the Earth's land surface, providing critical services such as carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and livelihoods for millions. However, these ecosystems are increasingly threatened; for instance, 13% of grasslands are degraded, and 34% show reduced function due to pressures like overgrazing, leading to soil erosion and diminished productivity. In response, and to support the implementation of UNCCD COP16 Decision 19 (on avoiding, reducing and reversing land and soil degradation of agricultural lands), FAO and the United Nations Environment Programme-International Ecosystem Management Partnership (UNEP-IEMP), hosted by the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), agreed to jointly develop a Global Report on Good Practices in Sustainable Management and Restoration of Agricultural Lands and Soils. Five more community-led African groups join global landscape restoration network Amid rapid deforestation in Uganda’s Kalangala district, the School Food Forest Initiative launched a tree-planting project in school premises in 2019, aiming to instill knowledge and value for conservation in local communities by involving students planting and managing trees. The initiative has just become part of the Global Landscapes Forum. Its coordinator, Ngobi Joel, said becoming a GLFx chapter will help strengthen the group’s work against deforestation in Uganda. The School Food Forest Initiative has established nurseries where schoolchildren and others in the community grow seedlings for a range of indigenous tree species, other fruit trees and medicinal plants. The NGO has also set up agroforestry and vegetable plots on school grounds that serve both to provide food for students and as demonstration sites for how to make use of the land in ways that conserve the environment, Joel told Mongabay by email from Kalangala town. The project has so far established eight school forests, Joel said.
