Welcome back. It was so good to see the razorbills back on the cliffs at Sumburgh Head this afternoon. Not a great photo, I’ll bring a real camera tomorrow. For those that log these things, the first cliff sighting of razorbills here last year was also 18th March. #Razorbills #AwesomeAuks #Shetland
The 2025 #seabird breeding results are in from the Isle of May:
Razorbills fledged 0.63 chicks per pair - right on the long-term average. Even better: 91.2% survival, well above the long-term average of 83.9%
Strong productivity + excellent survival = a really encouraging year for #Razorbills. 💚

Two Razorbills are standing below a Fulmar on the cliffs at Bempton Cliffs. The fulmar at the top is just on the edge, staring out into the distance. The two razorbills are on the same ledge below, one looking downwards and another with its arms spayed out and its mouth open, as if shouting. All three birds are black plumage on their heads/back and white underparts.

Seal Island, ME, is once again booming with the annual return of Puffins, Terns, Razorbills, Murres, Eider Ducks et al. Love Puffins most of all but the #Razorbills are always so nattily dressed 🤭...even on a windy day.

#guillemots favour rough (shattered) cliff faces where they crowd onto small ledges. This space and also the open sea, they freely share with #razorbills, #kittiwakes & the occasional #cormorant (cormorants have their own colonies too)
