A colour photograph of a river flowing (from left to right) through agricultural land. There are swans on the water, and a small island splitting the course into two. Ripples in places suggest the water is shallow. There is a tree on the far bank, and a barn beyond it. In the far distance, Pendle Hill surveys the scene, beneath low, broken cloud.

The dastardly section of the #RiverRibble that eroded away the south east corner of the fort at #Ribchester (Bremetennacum). Harrumph.

Low stone walls bounded by a modern retaining wall with a fence on top. A path runs down the far side, beyond the fence, with a hedge beyond that. The dominant colours are greens and browns.

The photo was taken from the edge of St. Wilfrid's Church graveyard.

Surviving foundations for the granaries at #RIbchester Roman Fort, #Lancashire. The central stones supported a raised floor intended to help keep the grain dry. There is evidence that the buildings were burned when the Romans abandoned the fort. #RomanFortThursday #RomanBritain

This sundry looking strip of grass is part of the road between #Kirkham & #Ribchester, (Margary 703) at Red Scar industrial estate, just east of #Preston, #Lancashire. It's amazing what you can find behind bus stops. #RomanBritain #RomanRoadsFriday

The entrance to the White Bull Hotel, #Ribchester, w. columns likely to be from the nearby Roman fort. The pub was built early C18, at which point there was prob. ancient masonry lying around, given that a fair bit survives still. #RomanSiteSaturday #Lancashire #RomanBritain #Pubs

For thy breath’s gradely sweet an’ werm,
        Aw like thee, May!

A colour portrait aspect photo of a stoneb doorway, blocked with smaller stones. It is a little crude, but the moulded imposts provide a degree of ornamentation. A downspout runs just to the left.

Roman horse eye guards, found by a clogmaker's son in #Ribchester in 1796, along with other military metalwork. Now displayed in British Museum. (All pre mid 20thC finds in #Lancashire were made by clogmaker's children...I expect.) #FindsFriday #RomanBritain

Aerial view of St. Wilfrid's Church, #Ribchester, from 1949. It is inside the site of Bremetenacum, a Roman fort that guarded a crossing of the Ribble. My crude highlight shows the fort's approximate extent & that the river has eroded around 1/3 of it. #RomanFortThursday #RomanBritain #Lancashire

Now we nervously await the #Swifts return and hope the renovations meet with their approval. HUUUGE thanks to our latest Swift hero, builder Martin Proctor from #Ribchester, who has set a shining example of how saving nature CAN be part of renovation works.

11 years ago I helped a #Ribchester farmer in to Higher Level Stewardship. It included an area of ancient #woodland that was sheep grazed and as such the ground flora was trashed. Thought I'd take a walk down there today in the hope it had recovered. Today was a good day! 😍💚
