Flowing along the Lidgate/Cowlinge parish boundary West of The Belt, the River Kennett remains a delightful chalk stream, despite various pipes, including inflows.

Just before the River Kennett enters Pound Green there is a patch of Watercress in it, besides the more common Fool's Watercress. Ground Ivy on the banks. It is joined from the East by a small tributary.

As the River Kennett flows towards Pound Green, Cowlinge it begins to be more like a stream, ancient trees along the bank, Cowslips on the bank and Fool's Watercress in the water.

You can see here the chalkiness of the soil as the River Kennett, managed as a ditch, flows out of the copse, towards Cowlinge, joined by field drains, but with Water Mint in the water & Cowslips along the banks. #WestSuffolk #Chalkstreams #Chalkstream #RiverKennett #Suffolk 3/22
The River Kennett, as it flows N of Hall Lane, Cowlinge, in a deeply dug ditch, banks dotted with Greater Stitchwort, through arable fields, soon flows into a small copse where it is joined from the East by a small tributary.

In #RiverKennett downstream of #RedLodge some Water Slaters/Hog Lice (Asellus aquaticus), the only NW European freshwater Isopod. Some Caddis Fly larvae but not as abundant as downstream. Lots snail eggs. Pendulous Sedge on the banks. #chalkstreams #WestSuffolk #Freckenham 3/3
Greater Water-moss dominant in #RiverKennett upstream of Badlingham & a few Crowfoots. Also a patch of Enteromorpha algae? Can anyone ID strange red shoots & roots? Hard to imagine in few weeks this vibrant #chalkstream likely to be dry riverbed. Wonder how natural this is? 2/3
Along the River Kennett between Red Lodge & Freckenham, a brood of Mallards commentated on by a loud Grey Wagtail, a busy Coot family & such a joy to have Swallows & House Martins sweeping the way ahead. #MyWalk #RiverKennett #RedLodge #Freckenham #Suffolk #BirdsSeenIn2021

Wonder if the absence of fish diversity in the River Kennett downstream of Badlingham, despite its lovely clear rushing water and #chalkstream plants, is due to the brutally steep, deep banks of this heavily modified channel?

In the #RiverKennett clouds of Minnows (suppose the irregular dark patches of pigment Minnows often have is natural - not disease?), some Sticklebacks but saw no other fish in a km of River.
Mallards & a dead pheasant.
Some strange roots - any idea what?

Further down the River Kennett, Chalk-stream? Water Crowfoot & - that rare thing round here - Marsh Marigold (Caltha palustris).
Any idea what these strange roots or shoots are?

#MySwim down the River Kennett from Badlingham was like swooshing down the flowing green locks of a #chalkstream Rapunzel; her hair in fact Cladophora algae, studded with Greater Water-moss (Fontinalis antipyrectica) #RiverKennett #WestSuffolk #Cambridgeshire @Britnatureguide 1/5
Here are the huge numbers of excited minnows enjoying the pressure current squirting through under natural dam of a fallen tree, coming up from a 3 m deep tunnel it has carved in the chalk. See the minnows hugging the floor of the tunnel at end of vid. #RiverKennett #Suffolk 6/7
