Happy 163rd birthday to James Curle 🎂
Born #OTD 27 March 1862 in Melrose, Curle led the excavations at Trimontium (1905–1910) and published A Roman Frontier Post and its People (1911), a landmark in Roman frontier studies. Still widely cited today.

#Spearheads found at #Trimontium ranging in shape & size, from 14" to 4¼". 80-180AD. Image 4 shows one particular example featuring a punctured inscription. #Roman soldiers often marked objects with their names to prove ownership.

🌉 Leaderfoot has 3 bridges over the Tweed — & once a 4th! Romans built a stone bridge here to carry Dere Street from #Trimontium, its site now lost. Today you’ll see the 1780 Drygrange Bridge, the 1968 road bridge & the striking 19-arch viaduct (1863).

Over 30 Roman intaglios have been found at #Trimontium Fort in the #ScottishBorders—tiny engraved gems worn in rings, rich with myth & meaning.
Many were found by fieldwalkers like Walter Elliot, a founder of the Trust. Each one offers a glimpse into #Roman life.

Ardoch Fort near Braco has some of the best-preserved #Roman earthworks in Britain. Built around AD 80, likely for auxiliary troops (possibly cavalry), it was reused in the Antonine period. Aerial views show its impressive layout!
