Photograph of a small stone-carved head displaying the features of Jupiter-Ammon, which is to say a bearded male face with curly hair and ram's horns. He looks to the left, but one can just make out that the back of his head carries a second face looking the other way.

Marble statue of a man wearing a loose-fitting tunic and phrygian cap, in the act of sacrificing a bull. He grasps it by the nose and prepares to cut its throat; both look up to the heavens as he does so. The subject matter and pose are typical of Mithras, originally a Persian god but worshipped widely amongst the Roman army. This example dates to the 2nd Century CE, and was found at the Villa del Mitra, Andalucia.

Mithras Slaying the Bull, Museo Arqueologico de Cordoba. Cheating a bit for #RomanFortThursday as this piece was found at a private villa, but the subject will have been popular with soldiers and he was reputedly born on this day. Merry Xmas! #Mithras #Archaeology #RomanSpain #Cordoba #Photography

Roman aqueducts are shown from left to mid-ground center perspective. A grey sky fills the top to mid right hand side. Bottom right shows a street with tiny people on it.
