Photograph taken looking up at a small stone sculpture of a cheerful friar sticking out from the black and white facade of the wonderful C14th Tudor manor house of Samlesbury Hall in Lancashire. House is timber construction and has the classic Tudor flower-like shapes called quatrefoils and stripes towards the apex.

Photograph taken in the grounds of Samlesbury Hall in Lancashire in early February last year. You're going to have to take my word for it that there was a Tudor wonder 50m away! A trio of hellebores with white petals with hints of the palest lime and speckles of burgundy surrounding unruly lime stamens. Dark tree behind and some orangey bark underneath. Never been a fan of that orangey bark as it distracts from the plants - what's wrong with the deep brown stuff? Samlesbury Hall is worth a visit if you're in the area - architecture, furniture, ghosts, tea room...what's not to love!

Photograph taken inside the Witch's Garrett at Samlesbury Hall in Lancashire. A dimly lit room, recreated as a space a witch may have occupied during the time of the Pendle Witch Trials in 1612. It has dried herbs and skins hanging and some marks scrawled onto the wall. The room is part of a few opened up to educate about the history of witchcraft in the local area. It was both creepy and familiar at the same time. Well worth a visit! Further info on the brilliantly unsettling exhibition is found in the comments.

A 3 x 3 collage of various wood carvings of characterful faces, taken at three properties: Speke Hall, Liverpool (Tudor) Lyme Park, Cheshire (Elizabethan) Samlesbury Hall, Lancashire (Tudor) All in dark wood and most taken from a partial side angle so the light illuminates the features. Makes me think of the various expressions seen on Christmas Day including someone worse for wear from festive booze (middle bottom), the poker face of irritation of the chef (middle top) and the furiousness of overtired kids (or adults!) as the day progresses (bottom right).

Photograph taken looking out through leaded glass to the ageing facade of the wonderful C14th Tudor manor house of Samlesbury Hall in Lancashire. House is timber construction and has the classic Tudor flower-like shapes called quatrefoils, here in a mixture of good and decaying states. Behind me (out of shot) is the entrance to a priest hole and one of the more spooky areas of the house. Well worth a visit but wrap up if going in winter...chilled to the bone!

Black and white photograph looking up at an angle at the Great Hall windows of the Grade I Listed, Samlesbury Hall in Lancashire. Built in 14th century as a medieval manor house and since restored. Reflections of the trees opposite in the glass. Black wood facade with intricate carving in places and the distinctive Tudor white infill. The original windows would have been tiny squares of glass within a lattice of leadwork rather than the large panes here.
