A young woman, recently bathed, sits gracefully on a wooden veranda. Her loose kimono, decorated with large circular patterns in soft blue and muted gold, drapes naturally, slipping off one shoulder to reveal pale skin. She faces forward, gaze turned slightly right, with a calm yet wistful expression and softly painted features. Her dark hair is styled in a traditional updo. Behind her, dense foliage of branches and leaves in subdued green and gray tones fills the background, creating a quiet, intimate atmosphere. Kitano Tsunetomi (北野恒富) was a Japanese painter and printmaker of the shin-hanga (新版画) and nihonga (日本画)traditions, renowned for his bijinga—idealized (美人画) portraits of women that combined elegance with psychological subtlety. Born in Osaka, he trained in traditional Japanese painting before studying Western techniques, giving his works a distinctive balance of classical refinement and modern sensitivity. By the 1910s and 1920s, when "After Bathing (Yokugo)" was created, he had established himself as a leading artist in Osaka’s vibrant art circles, contributing to the city’s role as a cultural counterweight to Tokyo. This period was marked by a wider shin-hanga movement that revitalized ukiyo-e aesthetics with modern subjects, and Kitano’s paintings of women reflected both timeless ideals of beauty and the changing roles of women in early 20th-century Japan. "After Bathing" captures not only physical grace but also the sense of intimacy and contemplation that became hallmarks of his style. Unlike more commercialized bijinga, Kitano’s figures often appear thoughtful and self-contained, suggesting inner lives beyond their outward beauty. Kitano left a profound legacy as a teacher, mentoring a generation of Kansai artists who continued to develop bijinga and nihonga traditions. His art remains celebrated for bridging Edo-period elegance with modern sensibilities, reminding us that beauty can embody both cultural continuity and subtle individual emotions.

I can't find any people of my generation who draw on silk, and I'm a little sad. It makes sense, most people who are into headscarfs are at least millenials. But silk is such a satisfying material to work with, so where are you, art kids?

Bijin-zu (美人図) by Japanese artist Yamakawa Shūhō (山川秀峰筆) depicts a young Japanese "beauty" wearing a colorful kimono (着物) outfit against a plain beige background. Born in Kyoto, Yamakawa first studied flower and bird painting for years, and then, in 1913, and began creating bijinga (美人画 or paintings of beautiful women). We see both skills in this painting with the large elaborate flowers (likely camellias, peonies, or chrysanthemums) on the maroon kimono and smaller flowers and patterns on the obi (帯) sash around the waist. The unidentified young woman stands in a relaxed pose, perhaps in mid-stride, looking down to her left. Her long straight black hair is parted in the middle and pulled up into a bun behind her neck. Her pale face and hands contrast with the background and kimono to draw our attention with accents from her dark rouge lips and manicured dark brows to highlight her beauty. Throughout the 1930s until his passing in 1944, Yamakawa received recognition and awards at national Japanese art exhibitions. His surviving works like this beauty have inspired generations of Japanese artists and those that admire this genre of painting.

Mai Thứ captures the concept of femininity from various perspectives throughout his work to celebrate Vietnamese traditions and folk culture through depictions of women. He favored painting in gouache and ink on silk to delineate women in various states such as Mélancolie, which through a fine treatment of details, depicts the beauty and tenderness of a young Vietnamese woman sitting on a wooden stool holding an open hand fan. Her restrained emotions, with their lustrous straight long dark hair complemented with soft-hued light green top and darker green pants—all come together as manifestations of beauty in accordance to traditional Vietnamese aesthetics. With an empty red sandal on the floor, she has raised her bare foot onto the stool to put her right elbow on her knee and rest her head in her right hand that completely conveys the sense of a melancholic moment in her life. The artist is one of the pioneers of modern Vietnamese painting. Born in Indochina during the French Colonization, Mai Thứ studied at the Fine Arts College of Indochina in Hanoi, graduating in its first class in 1930. In addition to mastering classical Western techniques of drawing and oil painting, he was skilled in figurative painting on silk and in various styles of Chinese painting. Seeking a new artistic expression that would be specifically Vietnamese, he gradually perfected a visual language after permanently settling in France in 1937. Through encounters with master painters of the European tradition, particularly Renaissance painters, Mai Thứ performed a subtle synthesis between Western and Vietnamese motifs. His pared-down images respond to a stylized ideal of gentleness and balance that led him to be considered among the most traditional of Vietnamese artists; however, in actuality, this universe, constructed from various references, is unique to Mai Thứ.

Here, two beauties, or モガ (moga) -- short for モダンガール (modan gaaru, or modern girls) -- sit on the beach, dressed in the latest 1930s sportswear and enjoying their ample leisure time. The unusual scalloped edge that encircles the two friends is a genius way of indicating they are in an unseen umbrella's shadow. The style is unmistakably Japanese but it depicts the growing influence of Western fashion in Japanese society at the time. The woman on the right stares almost confrontationally, as though daring us to gaze at her. She wears a sheer grey blouse, and her bathing suit and arms are slightly visible beneath it. She has a Western-style bob haircut and one of the newfangled permanent waves popular in the 1930s. Her friend lounges in a sleeveless candy-red and white vertical-striped jumpsuit and large burnt-red beach hat. At the height of fashion for the beach are their stripes, seen in their clothing and accessories, and even carried into the way the artist, 山川秀峰 (Yamakawa Shūhō), has rendered their dark hair. They are surrounded by their accessories -- an orange striped broad-rimmed hat, a wooden ukulele, and a cute round purse shaped like a teal volleyball with a handle. The woman on the right is 山本千代子 (Yamamoto Chiyoko), the daughter of a prominent Tokyo family and one of Shūhō’s students. One day after class, she was to meet a friend, Ota Misuzu, for an excursion to a coastal area close to Tokyo. The artist accompanied them and made sketches for this final composition. This screen created quite a stir when it was first shown in Japan's government-sponsored Teiten Exhibition in 1933. These are not the bijin ("beautiful women") of Edo-period woodblock prints, whose eyes rarely meet those of the viewer. Instead, the two women dare us to gaze at them. Their strong self-confidence, combined with modish Western attire and short haircuts, is on full display the preferred seashore playground of the moga in the early 20th century.

Lê Phô was one of the first Vietnamese artists to graduate from the École des Beaux Arts de l’Indochine (Indochina School of Fine Arts) in Hanoi, and his work represents the ambitious artistic experiments of his generation. In Jeune fille à la rose (1942), Phô depicts a young woman with a serene expression, dressed in traditional attire, set against a backdrop of a stylized garden and buildings. It is a moody painting utilizing a muted color palette of grays, beiges, and greens. The brushstrokes are visible, giving the painting a textured quality that is soft and evocative. The Vietnamese woman is presented with soft and rounded features with her eyes almost closed looking down with a calm and peaceful expression. Her red lips stand out from the light beige-gray, loose-fitting traditional clothing that harmonizes well with the background subtly rendered, suggesting a courtyard, with light and shadow plus buildings at a distance used to create depth and a sense of space. The soft colors and brushstrokes create a sense of tranquility. Her pose is slightly turned towards her right, and her gaze is directed downward, creating a sense of introspection although she seems quite relaxed.

A young Japanese woman stand with hands clasped together at her waist in front a tree with white blossoms. A multi-shade brown stripe silk kimono with red obi belt decorated with floral patterns. Her dark brown hair is pulled back into a tight bun. Toe socks and thick sandals with red strap peek out from under the kimono. Born in Okayama, Japan, Chiura Obata immigrated to San Francisco in 1903. He did not return to Japan until his father’s funeral in 1928. With this large-scale painting, begun on this trip, he also returned to the Japanese styles and subjects he had studied as a teenager at Tokyo’s elite Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Fine Arts Academy). Although much of Obata’s adult work is eclectic and personal in its artistic voice, that traditional academic training provided rare skills that made him a valuable teacher in the United States. He completed this painting in 1931 in San Francisco during a series of public art demonstrations. Obata ranks among the most significant California-based artists and Japanese American cultural leaders of the last century. He was successful at integrating Western practices into his art-making, and continued experimenting with new styles and methods throughout his seven-decade career. Today Obata is best known for majestic views of the American West, sketches based on hiking trips to capture what he called “Great Nature.” Every work is grounded in close observation, rendered with calligraphic brushstrokes and washes of color.
