Three older Spanish women in long gowns voting at a polling station in 1933. There is a woman receiving their ballots, and a couple of men and a young woman watching.
#OnThisDay, 19 Nov 1933, women across Spain voted for the first time.
General Franco seized power in 1939. Under his dictatorship only the heads of households could vote, radically reducing women's rights until his death in 1975.

New dispatch: Spirit and Splendor at the Blanton: A Quiet Reckoning
I went to the Blanton for art. I left metabolizing empire. A quiet museum visit, threaded with dynastic overlays, emotional yield, and sovereign resonance.

A wide-angle, low-view photo of the Valley of the Fallen (Valle de los Caídos) complex near El Escorial, Spain. Dominating the scene is the colossal stone cross atop a massive, rocky hill. Below the hill, a long, grey administrative-style building with a slate roof is visible, framed by a semi-circular colonnade with archways. The foreground is a large, empty stone plaza. The sky is a dramatic deep blue with scattered white clouds, and dark green trees frame the left side of the scene.

Students weren't the only ones fleeing Ireland in the early 1600s. In Surviving Kinsale, Ciaran O’Scea estimates some 10,000 migrants came to Galicia in the aftermath of the Nine Years War and met a “rapid learning curve” for adaptation (124).

Irish students described difficult conditions for Catholics in their homeland. Upon return to Ireland in 1607, one wrote that he could no longer recall a single day or night without clear danger [“un solo dia o noche sin… manifiestos peligros”].

Felipe III wasn’t alone in recognizing the reasons for the flight of Irish migrants. In a papal brief on July 10th, 1617, Paul V claimed to be especially vigilant for students exiled due to faith [“à patria sua causa fidei Catholicæ exulantes”].

View of Salamanca's historical city centre and cathedral from the Roman bridge.
Very lucky to be working in the archives at the University of Salamanca this summer. The city hosted the longest running Irish college in Iberia, open from 1592 to 1951, where students could have walked across the various versions of this Roman bridge in history.
