Hairy Woodpeckers have black wings checkered with white, a white front with a black "V" extending from the neck, two white stripes and a red patch on the head, a long dark beak, and a large white patch down the center of the black back. This bird is medium-sized, and larger than the similar Downy Woodpecker. He was perched on a brown branch with patches of green lichen, and was surrounded by many smaller brown and red branches. Seen at Stony Brook WS in Norfolk, Massachusetts.

This male Pileated Woodpecker is a very large, mostly black bird with a distinctive flaming-red, pointed crest, white stripes on the face and neck, black throat. and a red forehead and red moustache stripe. He has large feet and claws that he used to perch high up on the brown trunk of a tree with some green lichen on it, and small brown branches around him. It was a cloudy winter day and the sky was pale gray. Seen at Great Meadows NWR in Concord, Massachusetts.
