ChatGPT will come up with uses that are already out there, when prompted1. And ChatGPT has no ‘tacit’ knowledge: it has never held a paperclip in its hands (for it has none), palpated it, idly played with it, twisted it out shape, manipulated it, scratched an itch with it - or any of the other possibilities that a paperclip affords: we humans can quickly understand the range of action offered by an object with little to no explanation. ChatGPT simply can’t. It’s not even a brain in vat, being fed stimulation from the outside world: it’s just code.

I’m curious about testing something in particular about the supposed ‘creativity’ of LLMs: can, when challenged, an AI/LLM come up something genuinely creative - not a weighted sum of tokens of text the AI has learned - but something that it is novel, of value, that after experiencing it, you can’t remember how you saw things before? Something really, importantly, creative? I don’t think so, and here I offer a test for testing creativity for LLMs/AIs.
