How the Other Half Lives, Jacob A Riis

Riis's 1890 classic exposed the squalid conditions of NYC tenements and sparked a movement for housing reform. A powerful work of photojournalism and social justice.

Love this ghost sign painted on a wall beside the entrance to a tenement on West Princes Street in the Woodlands area of Glasgow. It's repeated again on the neighbouring close as well.

I don't know quite what was creating this silhouette on a window of a Glasgow tenement that I came across last night, but whatever it is, it sure looks like they're planning something!

Experience of energy transitions – a historical view from the tenements of Glasgow If it feels like deja vu, it’s because we’ve changed energy types before

"The home I was born in was a tenement in Govan, Glasgow. It was a ‘room and kitchen’, heated by a coal fire in the ‘living’ room. The bedroom and toilet – we had an indoor toilet – had no heating except that which emanated from the solitary coal fire in the house."
