The short-lived 'reign' of #EmpressMatilda as #LadyOfTheEnglish came to an end. Theoretically entitled to be called Queen, she was never crowned. Her marriage to the Holy Roman Emperor earned her the title of Empress. This period of civil war in England is called #TheAnarchy.

Earthworks at Cam's Hill near Cowbridge, south-west of Malmesbury, believed to be a possible site of one of the three siege castles which guarded the approaches to Malmesbury in 1144. See https://www.malmesburyhistorysociety.org.uk/cam-hill-1 for more details.
It is possible that one of Robert's siege castles left traces which can be seen today as the earthwork on Cam's Hill near Cowbridge.
The siege left Malmesbury in extreme hunger for a time, until King Stephen himself led a large force to relieve the town and castle.
