En effet, une startup américaine, Marathon Fusion, vient de publier un papier scientifique où ils expliquent tranquillement comment transformer du mercure en or dans leurs réacteurs à fusion nucléaire. Et attention, je ne vous parle pas de trois grammes pour faire joli, mais bien de **5 tonnes d ’or par gigawatt d’électricité produit par an**. C’est le rêve des alchimistes du Moyen Âge qui devient réalité grâce à la physique nucléaire. C’est un truc de fou, surtout que le principe est relativement simple (enfin, sur le papier). Vous prenez du mercure-198, un isotope assez commun du mercure. Vous le bombardez avec des neutrons rapides de 14 MeV générés par la fusion deutérium-tritium dans un tokamak. Le mercure-198 perd alors un neutron et devient du mercure-197, qui est instable. Et en 64 heures environ, pouf, il se transforme naturellement en or-197, le seul isotope stable de l’or.
