I tend to start my days with lighter sounds. Sure, sometimes they are introspective and on occasion melancholic, but today I find myself in a truly dark mood due to various goings-on. Normally I would offset this with something… not that, but instead I’m leaning into it. Front 242 once said, “True beauty is cold” and I am certainly feeling that, so with a heavy dose of that aesthetic, here’s some more (US) morning mellow. Play loud.

Our photograph is taken from a very low angle, as if the viewer is standing at the base of two tall trees and looking straight up toward the sky. The trees dominate the frame, rising powerfully upward. In the foreground, one thick tree trunk stands slightly to the right. Wrapped tightly around this trunk are twisting vines, thin, rope-like tendrils that coil and spiral in every direction. Some cling closely to the bark, while others loop outward in loose curves, creating a tangled, web-like pattern across the surface. To the left stands a second tree trunk, slightly farther back. It too has been cut near the top, leaving two short, upward-pointing stubs that resemble raised arms or a forked shape. This trunk is also heavily entwined with vines, though it is partly in shadow, making it appear darker and more dramatic. The vines themselves are dry and woody, with small offshoots branching in many directions. They create a sense of movement, like frozen streams of twisting lines climbing toward the sky. Behind the trees, the sky is a deep, rich blue with faint wisps of cloud. In the lower background, softer and more out of focus, other leafless trees can be seen, their thin branches forming delicate patterns against the sky. The lighting is strong and directional, from bright sunlight. It casts highlights on the bark and vines, emphasizing their rough textures, while shadows deepen the grooves and crevices. The overall feeling is dramatic and slightly wild, nature reclaiming the trees with a network of climbing vines, all set against a clear, open sky. Finally, our picture is finished with a simple white border frame.

This photograph shows a tall, elegant steeple of St.Mary’s church reaching sharply into the sky taken the week before last in a town called Carlow in Ireland close to where live. The tower is built in Gothic style, with narrow arched windows and pointed details along its upper edges. The spire rises high above, tapering to a fine point topped with a cross. The image is in dramatic black and white the church glows pale against a dark, moody sky filled with thick, rolling clouds. Light and shadow play across the stone, giving the scene a haunting and timeless feel, as if the church stands watch between heaven and storm. And finally our picture is finished with a white border frame with a small poem l wrote for this capture which l have included below: “The Watcher in the Sky” A needle of stone through tempest’s sigh, Its prayer unspoken pierces the sky. Where shadows gather and angels weep, The tower keeps the heavens’ sleep.
