Amid the Gothic splendour an overcarved #UberGothic C19 pulpit. It does at least give the opportunity to use the term 'nodding ogee' for that is the form of the niches housing the apostles. Finialed crocketed nodding #ogee to be precise #StMaryRedcliffe Bristol #SundaySermons
The #WillsMemorialBuilding, Bristol. Early C20 Perpendicular-Style. Mouse doesn't find this #UberGothic style of building to her taste but then taste is by its very nature a personal thing. It looks unfinished to Mouse, like there should be another stage (it's the corner turrets)
Ghastly or gorgeous? Amid the Gothic spender of the cathedral sits this Victorian pulpit. Does it fit in or is it a case of the #UberGothic? It's a given of course that the stacking chairs while economic are utterly out of place #HolyTrinityBristol for #SundaySermons
Victorian Gothic could end up as a pastiche of the wonderful medieval Gothic styles that they copied. This arch mixes up decoration from different Gothic periods. Mouse tends to identify things as #UberGothic when they are far more elaborate than the medieval original. 'Over the top', if you like 🐭
Mouse say one thing and one thing only... #UberGothic
The Victorian era saved many if not most of England's fine churches but in some there was an architectural price to pay. This arch is part of the price #StGeorgeEastonInGordano #NorthSomerset #StoneworkSunday #SundayStonework
Nave, next to choir screen #StGeorgeDunster #Somerset
Victorian stone carved pulpit masquerading as a C15 original. You can tell, it's an over-elaborate pastiche (if you don't believe Mouse see the beautiful medieval examples in Mouse's timeline) #SundaySermons #UberGothic
Mouse amazed by this! At first glance it looks 100% #UberGothic (Victorian) because every possible edge and side has some decoration (crocketed shafts is pretty OTT), but up close the pigment suggests it's much older.....
It's definitely a spectrum from sensitive Gothic homage to the brutal bulldozer of #UberGothic. Mouse like the softer end of the spectrum 🐭
Chancel, rebuilt mid-C19, from east #StMaryEastBrent #Somerset on #TraceryTuesday
Pointed 3-light window with cusped lights, very fine and ornate tracery, and label with floriate stops. Sometimes (just sometimes) when you Gothic things up you get something special #UberGothic
South chapel #StMaryEastBrent #Somerset #MemorialMonday
#UberGothic, even in death
Reredos #StMaryHutton #Somerset #StonemasonryMonday
Cusped pointed and #Ogee panels, some with text, surmounted by finials. Teetering on the brink of the #Ubergothic and clearly C19
Exquisite and authentic C15 pulpit. Although it's covered in intricate carving, the sense of proportion and scale identifies it as the real thing (i.e. not #UberGothic)
#StLawrenceWick #Somerset #SundaySermons
"Exquisitely carved. Classic C15 Somerset 2-light cusped window motif!"
"Now, let's put in a triangular arch, tons of finials, heraldry and lots and lots of Tudor roses"
"Indistinguishable from the real thing!"
#StonemasonryMonday #AllSaintsKingstonSeymour #Somerset #UberGothic
Too much egg in my pudding...
Central motif of blind pointed cusped 2-light window surmounted by quatrefoil of the local school on a C15 font (right) #StPeterBleadon and C19 homage(?) #AllsaintsKingstonSeymour. This is what Mouse mean when she say #UberGothic #StonemasonryMonday
A whole lot of carving...
Although passing a vague resemblance to a C15 pulpit the Victorians always give themselves away by going that one or two steps too far. It's a C19 #UberGothic facsimile #AllSaintsKingstonSeymour #Somerset for #SundaySermons
A tale of two piscinas and some truly criminal pointing in a grade I listed church. Honestly, truly criminal. Right, slighted C14, left (despite any claim to the contrary) #UberGothic C19 (with ball flowers) #StAndrewClevedon #Somerset #StoneworkSunday #SundayStonework #Piscina
East elevation of north aisle #StPeterPortishead #Somerset #AdoorableThursday
The #Ogee door is modern but Mouse can't make up her mind about the provenance of the doorway. Square set, heavily moulded with an interesting hollow moulded motif to the spandrels. Is it #UberGothic?
North aisle looking east #StPeterPortishead #Somerset #TraceryTuesday
Stone strainer arch although it's not clear if it actually has a structural role. Decorated with daggers and quatrefoils in roundels. C19 #UberGothic. The openwork to the screen behind is rather pleasant
You'll see #UberGothic C19 pastiches of this cusped re-re arch but his is the real C13 McCoy albeit somewhat clumsily reset. Mouse say "beautiful"
#StAndrewLoxton #Somerset #WindowsOnWednesday #FromInsideOut
A #ViewFromTheChurchDoor #StAndrewComptonBishop #DoorwayThursday
Original and in situ, reset or C19 #UberGothic pastiche, Mouse never has a cusped trefoil view before. It's all rather lovely
South porch #StAndrewComptonBishop #Somerset for #DoorwayThursday
The Listing says C13. No problem with that trefoil but this seems too well preserved, too ornate for this church and has that C19 #UberGothic about it. Anyone got any similar that are definitely C13?
The 2-bay arcade, trefoil arches and cylindrical piers and responds can be found in some rarer C13 piscina, but the setting and little ambry has the feel of C19 #UberGothic. It's all a bit well preserved. But look close, it appears to be original #StAndrewComptonBishop #Somerset
North aisle #AllSaintsKedleston #Derbyshire
You can tell from the somewhat over-elaborate style of the arcade that this is an #UberGothic addition rather than the real thing. A 1909 addition since you asked and a shrine to the Curzons #MemorialMonday
The #BadgworthChurchDoorTour (5/5): Priests door. Chancel. South #StCongarBadgworth #Somerset
Journey's end. Solid Victorian masquerading as Early English. Typical C19 #UberGothic descending into pastiche with exaggerated decoration and oversized foliate stops #AdoorableThursday
Lordy! See what you mean. Now that. That is #UberGothic TTM🐭
South of chancel arch #AllertonChurch #Somerset #SundaySermons
As with much of this church a fairly restrained homage to a much earlier design. This is just on the cusp of the #UberGothic period. Gothic Revival without going totally over the top
Mouse seen some #UberGothic pulpit monstrosities in her time and Butterfield has been guilty of many (and fonts too) but this is the real thing, C15 and contemporaneous with the second building phase of the church. Mouse say "Beautiful" #SundaySermons #StAndrewCheddar #Somerset
The difference between Gothic-Revival and Gothic. All Gothic elements perhaps, but all at once, all in one place #UberGothic #AdoorableThursday #StMaryChepstow
Elaborately carved #UberGothic, late C19 pulpit #StMaryChepstow #SundaySermons
English church and indeed domestic architecture follows a very similar pattern. Mouse has a particular distaste for the Gothic revival though. Give a Victorian an #Ogee and they'll #UberGothic it up way past the point where it totally loses its visual appeal. Mouse blame Pugin TTM🐭
