Nemesis...
Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces. Some highlights of the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuttonToBrentKnoll leg that Mouse didn't get around to sharing. Much as it pains Mouse to say so, this #PeckyMouseBotherer is resplendent in plumage of reflected light #StMaryHutton
The top of the pile of stair turrets from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuttonToBrentKnoll leg: #StMaryHutton. Polygonal turret with hexagonal pyramid spirelet. The upper stage has cusped panels. More Swiss castle than English church? #TowerTuesday
The most charming chancel arch from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuttonToBrentKnoll leg is found at #StMaryHutton. The moulding is described as step and wave, which is what Mouse is trained to do when making celebrity appearances (Mouse think it's double chamfered though)
In churches dominated by wooden pulpits in the Renaissance style of early C17 this fine stone pulpit at #StMaryHutton is the stand out on the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuttonToBrentKnoll leg #SundaySermons
The stained glass of the churches on the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuttonToBrentKnoll leg is unremarkable to say the least (and largely Mouse didn't). These from #StMaryHutton are as good as it gets #StainedGlassSunday
As #FontsMeanFarewell it's time to move on to review the next leg of the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast. Leg two: #HuttonToBrentKnoll Part A: #StMaryHutton #StMaryEastBrent #StChristopherLympsham
Mouse off on her hols so everyone will get a rest from her incessant #ChurchChomping for a couple of weeks. Mouse will probably pop up with some comments and the odd diversion every now and again, but in the meantime here is a very lovely C19 window from #StMaryHutton #Somerset
Mouse suggested that nothing really stood out at the church of #StMaryHutton #Somerset which made choosing a #MouseFavouritePhoto quite tricky, but there is something about the simplicity of this door and the blend of textures and colours that makes it a winner
And so as #FontsMeanFarewell what of the church of #StMaryHutton #Somerset? Another typically charming Perpy church. Not startling, but with enough interest to hold the attention of this Mouse. Well worth a quick visit at least. A solid 3/5 #MusVisit ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ
Ancient and modern ...
Mouse woke up this morning and realised that she hadn't shared her #FridayPipes. Well here they are accompanied by a KORG keyboard and a TV screen. East of south aisle #StMaryHutton #Somerset
Panel of four quatrefoils with opposing pointed lobes arranged around a cross #StMaryHutton #Somerset #FontsOnFriday
Zoom in to see the tooling around the quatrefoils. Does that help with the dating at all?
It's very late, but it's never too late for a high quality #BootScraper... and as if by magic, here's a corker #StMaryHutton #Somerset for #FerrousFriday
Talk about hedging your bets... this is described as 'a font of late date', probably because it could be a genuine Perpendicular font or a Victorian copy. What do you reckon? #StMaryHutton #Somerset for #FontsOnFriday
The enduring allure of #ChurchDoorFittings
West door #StMaryHutton #Somerset #FerrousFriday
Loss of face...
These are described as angels, but Mouse think they are seated figures. There seems to have been a (now) lost bottom section and although weathered were probably not the original stops #StMaryHutton #Somerset #FridaysFacesInStone
Mouse love the aesthetic of the Perpendicular west window and door combo. The west often considered the narthex and original location of the font, but were windows and doors like this put in at the same time? There's a clue in this one #StMaryHutton #Somerset #AdoorableThursday
Cutesy church gate from #StMaryHutton #Somerset for #Thursgate
South of C19 rebuilt chancel #StMaryHutton #Somerset
Priest's door. Ovolo moulded pointed doorway housing planked door with some 'statement' hinges. The relieving arch of roughly hewn voussoir hints at the construction period. Quite cutesy Mouse think
A #ViewFromTheChurchDoor #StMaryHutton #somersetgetaway
Just a little peek...
Door or gate? #StMaryHutton #Somerset for #Thursgate or #AdoorableThursday
North of nave. Mouse love this kind of box pew and is always delighted to find some rare survivors. These C17. They remind Mouse of 3rd class open carriages on Victorian railways. All aboard for worship!
West of tower #StMaryHutton #Somerset for #AdoorableThursday
A door worthy of a closeup. C15 stud and moulded fillet with a rich colour that only comes with time and care
West of tower #StMaryHutton #Somerset #DoorwayThursday
Once you get past a few combinations of chamfer, roll, cavetto, ovolo, cyma, wave, step and keel you have to resort to 'richly moulded' and this doorway is exactly such. Richly moulded with label and angel stops
Nave #StMaryHutton #Somerset #Woodensday
Nave, chancel and south aisle have roofs similar in design. Wagon with moulded ribs and purlins, large carved bosses and duck egg painted panels. Very nice think Mouse
South of C19 chancel #StMaryHutton #Somerset for #WindowsOnWednesday
Fairly faithful copy of a Decorated-Perpendicular mix of styles. 2-light window with cusped (trefoil) pointed lights and quatrefoil over. The lower lobe is pointed to fit into the spandrel of the lights below
South aisle C19 #StMaryHutton #Somerset for #WindowsOnWednesday
Pointed 3-light windows, more Decorated-style than Perpendicular, with cusped #Ogee lights. The central window has more intricate tracery
Tower #StMaryHutton #Somerset
Simple lierne vaulting with huge gilt bosses supported on angel corbels. Quite arty with the coloured bell ropes, Mouse think
More than meets the eye... north of nave #StMaryHutton #Somerset #TowerTuesday #TinyWindowTuesday
Original C15 rood turret. Embattled and with quatrefoil #TinyWindow now obscured by rainwater goods (and by a philistine builder). Just visible; relocated cote for the sanctus bell
North of nave #StMaryHutton #Somerset #TraceryTuesday
Beautiful Perpendicular pointed 3-light window with cusped #Ogee lights and roll moulded label with flat stops
