Saw The Unthanks in Worcester tonight. Small intimate venue that seemed to me to suit the subtly understated nature of these talented musicians’ song’s & performance. I particularly enjoyed their interpretation of ‘Shipbuilding’ & one about a pigeon who is in Derby Museum!

This song is based on a statement Patience aged 17 gave when she was called upon to provide testimony to the Ashley’s Mines Commission of 1842. A stream had overflowed into the ventilation drift of a coal mine causing the death of 26 children.
