Ogee-headed door lintel and cat flap on a probable meal house at Plas Penmynydd. I had my lunch in a greenhouse formed from a pigsty attached to this building at the 2018 Vernacular Architecture Group conference on Anglesey.

Wooden house, 5 bays wide, on raised piers with the floor about a meter above ground level. A front porch or gallery in front under the roof supported by columns with a central staircase leading to the front door at the center of the front. On each side of the front door are pairs of windows. The doors and windows all have open shutters painted teal. The front wall is painted light yellow, the rest is painted white. A single dormer window is upstairs centered over the doorway. A flag of purple green and gold flys from beside the doorway, marking Carnival or Mardi Gras season.

A close-up view of a traditional 19th-century Bulgarian house in Bansko. The facade features white-washed stone walls on the ground floor and dark wood on the upper level. A prominent wooden chardak (balcony) with intricate carvings is visible on the right. Below the upper windows, there is a horizontal band of hand-painted floral ornaments in blue, red, and green colors.

The 19th-century Bulgarian soul. 🎨 Hand-painted ornaments and masterfully carved wood represent the peak of the National Revival era. Every detail in Bansko's old houses carries the pulse of a bygone century.

A series of carvings - each has three straight lines that meet in a point at the top. Almost like an arrow pointing up but the lines are all equal length.

I walked to the Tithe Barn in Bradford on Avon yesterday. It’s 5 mins from home and has these wonderful apotropaic marks. They’re everywhere down there, if you look closely. The angular lines are about 10-12 feet from the ground.

Goodramgate & Monk Bar, York. Buildings of the 14th, 17th & 18th centuries, most of them cloaked in later fabric, including a former coaching inn that ran coaches to Malton & Pickering.

We would all be happier if we filled our towns and cities with well tended plant pots.

I’ve always admired the creamy yellow brick houses of southern Ontario—simple, agrarian in form, rooted in farmhouse archetypes. Some are altered, but the vernacular character and straightforward design still shine in small towns across the region. #vernaculararchitecture

A house typical of Germany's Bergisches Land. One side has characteristic slate siding, another has visible timber framing warped with age. The doors and windows have white molding. The roof is steeply pitched. It is probably 200 or 300 years old.
