A super vivid vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel abstract modernist brooch/pendant by artist/sculptor/enamelist Aristide Gagnon (b. 1930) of Quebec, Canada. A gorgeous piece by an accomplished enamelist who etched the underlying copper before applying the vividly colored enamels overtop in shades of bright almost Kelly green and an orangish metallic gold! Versatile piece that can be worn as a brooch or on a chain or cord as a pendant! Truly a unique piece of wearable art by a Canadian cultural treasure!
This large brooch measures 3" long by 1.5" wide. Marked as shown at back, "A. Gagnon Quebec" for the artist/enamelist/sculptor Aristide Gagnon of Quebec. As noted above, this piece is both a brooch and a pendant, and can be worn on a cord or chain or even a neckring for a great modernist necklace look! I can included a black fabric cord at no additional charge if desired, just let me know in the notes section when making the purchase. In excellent vintage condition.
***A note for collectors: pieces by this artist are sometimes mistakenly attributed to a fictitious Andre Gagnon. I'm not sure where this particular bit of misinformation began, but the marks found on enamel jewelry from the 1960s and 1970s, "A. Gagnon", "Arist. Gagnon", and "Aristide Gagnon", are all for the same person, Aristide Gagnon of Quebec, Canada.***

"Multidisciplinary artist Aristide Gagnon studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Québec from 1952 to 1956. His work can be found in a number of public and private collections, including at the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec, and encompasses the fields of painting, glass, stained glass and copper enameling. He also developed an interest in metal casting, particularly in bronze, in 1970; using lost-wax and sand casting, he creates primarily spherical forms, which allow him to explore his material and capture its energy and dynamism. He has shown his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Quebec and other provinces, the United States and France."

A rare vintage 1950s one of a kind handmade pewter and enamel over silver and gold Adam & Eve Garden of Eden design two-piece modernist box by American artist/enamelist Hilda Kraus. A two piece oval-shaped box with the top fitting closely over the bottom section. The top section features the enamel over gold and silver artwork at top, and the bottom section is signed inside as shown. No doubt one of a kind as were all of her boxes, and a colorful depiction of Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden with Eve offering Adam a bite of her apple. Hilda Kraus was a renaissance-woman, and worked in a lot of different materials over the course of her career. She is particularly well known for her handmade pewter boxes, most with inset enamel on gold overlaid on silver sections like this one. I also have listed here on Ruby Lane another of her boxes with a mythological creature depicted at top, a pendant in pewter with one of these gold over silver enameled sections, a wonderful modernist enamel in sterling silver brooch by her, and a couple of her unique one of a kind pewter modernist serving sets. To find other items by her in my store please search by the Artist name in my shop.
This is one of her larger enameled boxes. The box is in two pieces, the lid and the base. The box measures 3.5" across by 3-1/8" at top by 2.5" tall, and weighs about 12 ounces total. Stamped mark inside as shown, "Hilda Kraus Pewter". Pewter is a soft metal, so there are some fine light scratches to the metal and lots of tarnish that I haven't touched, but that can be easily removed with a jar of store-bought pewter polish, or you may choose to have the box professionally polished - there are a couple of fine craze lines inside the enamel at top in the 'sky' section that you can see clearly in my photo from the top, but that otherwise aren't really apparent and don't detract in the least when displayed and the crazing is 'inside' the enamel and can't be felt on the surface.

Hilda Kraus, a well-known designer, artist, jeweler, enamelist and metalsmith, was born in New York City in 1915. She had a B.A. from Hunter College in 1935 and completed her post graduate studies at International Academy of Art, Salzburg, Austria, in 1967, 72, 77. Ms. Kraus served as an apprentice to a Danish silversmith for 3 years. and studied traditional enameling methods in the great centers of Europe (France, Italy, Germany). She at one time had shops in N.Y.C, Connecticut and Maine. When she moved to Westport in the 1950’s she maintained her studio in her home. Hilda spent many hours teaching and taking classes at the Brookfield Craft Center, as well as being a part of both solo and joint exhibitions there. Hilda was a lifetime member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists and a Master Craftsman as awarded by the Society for Connecticut Craftsman. During her lifetime, Hilda was the recipient of many awards and prizes for her work both here and in Europe, especially for her work in cloisonné enamels. Her work is in the collections of the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse; the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York; and the Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington.
In 1946, her work was featured in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art called Modern Handmade Jewelry, one of the earliest and most influential jewelry exhibitions in the postwar period. She was also awarded a purchase prize in the seminal exhibition Enamels ’70 organized by the Craft Alliance of St. Louis.
Understanding the vision and importance of the Brookfield Craft Center as an institution of fine craft and catalyst for creativity, Ms. Kraus left a legacy gift to the BCC upon her death in 2014. Through the generosity of her long-time friend and Brookfield Craft Center supporter, Nell Mullen, a retrospective exhibition of her life’s work was featured in the Lynn Tendler Bignell gallery at the Craft Center in April of 2017.

A large vintage 1960s 70s one of a kind handmade enamel on steel modernist Capricornus Capricorn design artwork by Dekor Zagreb of the former Yugoslavia, now in Croatia. A striking mid century modernist artwork of the mythical creature Capricornus also known as Capricorn of the Zodiac, an astrological sign. Capricornus gets its name from a Greek myth that says the god Pan was transformed into a half-goat, half-fish when he dived into the Nile River to escape the giant Typhon. A striking modernist design in a vivid turquoise blue and black! Measures 9.25" diameter by 1" tall at the rim, and weighs about a little under a pound prior to packaging. Still retains the original Dekor Zagreb sticker at back as shown in the photos, as well as "Ručni Rad" (Handmade). Excellent vintage condition.

A wonderful vintage 1950s 60s handmade copper enamel on gilt metal modernist beatnik Musical design compact designed by American designer/enamelist Judith Daner (1936-2023) for the Robert Wuersch company of Fall River, MA.
The copper enamel section is entirely handmade and has a wonderful mid century modernist design of musical instruments! The copper enamel section is laid down on a standard gilt metal compact base that opens to reveal a mirror and powder section. The compact measures 2-7.8" by 2-1/2" by just under 3/8" thick. Although this compact is unmarked presently, it no doubt originally had a paper label by Wuersch company. In addition, I have the same design pair of bookends for sale in my store California Dreaming here on Ruby Lane for comparison, and there is no doubt it is by Daner for Wuersch. The inside is in great shape with just a few spots of tarnish to the mirror and inside surfaces. There is considerable wear and tarnish to the bottom of the compact as shown, but of course this is not really visible when in use or displayed in a collection.

Judith Daner (1936 - 2023) biography
Based in Ashland, enamellist Judith Daner was raised in New York and studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn before settling in Massachusetts. In her early 20s, she began her career doing finish work at an enamel giftware company in Connecticut. Her illustrious art career started with pencil illustrations in the Far Rockaway High School yearbook. She later graduated with Top Honors from Parsons School of Design in NY. She began her work as a designer for Bovano of Cheshire, CT, and Robert Wuersch Associates of Fall River, MA, for whom she designed an enormous catalog of influential mid-century art. She also created numerous special commissions for corporate institutions. Her work graced the windows of Bergdorf Goodman in New York, and she had the rare honor of having three pieces selected for the 1975 Limoges Biennale Internationale in France. Her work is in private collections and has been shown in galleries worldwide. However, as she developed her style and technique, she continued to approach her work not as a metalsmith but as an artist.
First and foremost, Judith was a dynamic art teacher who loved her students. She taught enameling at The Worcester Center for Crafts for over 20 years and at Brookfield Craft Center, de Cordova Museum School, Snowfarm, Metalwerx, and the West Palm Beach Enameling Guild.
Judith Daner's works have been exhibited at the Worcester Center for Crafts and other art venues and institutions. She divided her time between teaching and creating more enamel compositions until she passed away on April 28, 2023.

a BIG vintage 1950s handmade copper enamel abstract modernist design bowl in black white and red by American artist/enamelist Edward Winter. A bold abstract composition in high contrast colors, but with a slight iridescence to the black in parts as a twist, makes this a stand-out work by Winter!
This bowl measures 9.75" diameter by 1.75" high at the rim. Weight is about a pound and a half prior to packing. Excellent vintage condition with the top side with no chips but some very very light scratches, and a few original 1/16" kiln flaws on the underside which of course don't show when displayed.
An indefatigable spokesperson for the field, Edward Winter played a critical role in the development of enameling in this country in the first half of the twentieth century. Born in Pasadena, California and raised in Ohio, Winter studied at the Cleveland School of Art, graduating in 1931. In his final year, one of his teachers – Julius Mihalik, a design instructor and former head of the Royal Hungarian School of Industrial Art in Budapest – encouraged Winter to travel to Vienna to continue his studies in design. Following his teacher’s advice, Winter studied enameling and metalwork with the prominent designer Josef Hoffmann and ceramics with the acclaimed ceramist and designer Michael Polowny. During this year, Winter studied several areas of design but began to focus increasingly on enameling. Winter’s studies in Vienna – where he was exposed to the latest innovations in European painting, sculpture, and design – changed the course of his career and solidified his commitment to enameling and to a modernist aesthetic. Through the course of his almost forty-five year career, Edward Winter dramatically advanced enameling in this country through a combination of teaching, writing, and most important, through his own extraordinary work.

a ONE OF A KIND vintage 1960s handmade copper enamel abstract modernist artwork by Israeli artist/enamelist Agi Vardi of Giv'at Haim, Israel. An outstanding original artwork by a prominent Israeli mid century artist/enamelist! Vardi is both a painter and a teacher who works in enamel, batik, and collage. He was born in Hungary, and studied at the Beaux Arts in Paris, before moving to Israel where he became a member of the Giv'at Haim artist colony.
This artwork is copper enamel at center with underlaying bands of copper all above a dark brown velvet over board background, and is still in its original period wood frame. Measures 13" by 13" by 1" tall at outer edges. Marked at front as shown, also written information at back as shown. The cardboard backing is loose in one corner at back where the tape has lifted slightly but this is of course not at all noticeable when the artwork is hung, and is easily remedied if you wish with a bit of tape or glue.
Excellent vintage condition.
