A mannequin is in a garden - green plants, some white painted wood lattice and a wooden fence are behind it. On the mannequin is a hand knitted, asymmetrical purple shawl thing - in Feather &Fan stitch (aka Old Shale) with Garter Stitch borders. One end of this shawl is sewn to be a sleeve, cuffed at the wrist and opening out at the elbow into a rectangle which goes about the shoulders and falls to approximately the knees, on the opposite side. That non-sleeve end has a large pocket … this is an odd garment but I like it. The yarn is a plum purple with lots of flecks of mustard gold and teal. Bendigo woollen mills ‘Neon’ 8ply sheep wool. The pattern was in a leaflet dating from the late 40s - early 50s from ‘Botany’ brand yarns.

#showusyourknits this week the theme is DK weight (aka 8ply). Finished this about 8yrs ago - knitted to a 1950s pattern. Basically a long rectangular shawl with one end stitched together to become a sleeve. It doesn’t fall off but it is strange - more in the Alt Text 🧶 #handknit #vintagepattern

Armseye curve is much sharper and deeper than modern bodice patterns, with deepest part of the curve coming in about halfway to the collar. Bodice top is sitting on a wooden table with various sewing tools, (thread, scissors, pin cushion, tailors ham, clear ruler) and a white coffee canister and closed wooden box with fabric scraps poking out, and other pattern pieces in a jumbled pile.

Best fit adjustment ever: cutting the armseye pretty deep into the back.

Completely fixes how most tops felt too tight in my shoulders and I’d pull at the seams if I moved too much. #sewing #vintagepattern
