The seasons are definitely changing. Chiffchaffs have been singing here for a couple of days now, and I've just seen 57 whooper swans heading north.

Another busy day of #Vizmig in Longdendale on my walk to the station via nursery; lots of thrushes & finches moving including 60 Redwings and 3 Crossbills, 2 grounded Chiffchaffs @ Lambgates, expected a YBW at any minute. @derbyshirebirds.bsky.social also noticed a reminder that I'm speaking tonight

Skylark were late starting and first went over after I'd finished counting just after 08:30. Also a small flock of Crossbill over later. On the ground a few Chiff, Goldcrest and at least 3 Firecrest.

Walking back from the school run, a group of 11 Whooper Swans came in high from the west, and their calls spurred the 19 on the reservoir to leave; with both groups heading E up Longdendale @derbyshirebirds.bsky.social #VizMig #UKBirding

Nice morning pottering down the #allotment, digging up a few spuds and carrots, keeping one eye on the sky for any #BareNakedBirding #VizMig; a few young House Martins and Swallows exploring, a handful of warblers on edge of quarry, 3 Yellow Wagtails south.

Yup, earnt an afternoon nappy-nap now😇

At dusk tonight watched 2 Blackbirds leave Howick, tower high into the sky and away. Next stop Scandinavia presumably.. a great sight at this time of year...

Well over 100 birds seen in 20 mins of #thermal #vizmig including at least 4 flocks of presumed wildfowl (only one low enough to estimate size, most likely eight geese).

But I only heard one Coot and one Redwing, so everything else unidentified. And #nocmig recording is only scratching the surface.

Running #BWPUC in an old open fronted robin nestbox, which I’ve been trying (unfixed) in different garden locations. Powering from a 10kmah power bank £20’ish off Amazon. It uses virtually no power at all! Can’t wait to run it for #nocmig and once Spring #vizmig gets underway. #norfolkbirding

I’ve skipped a bunch of other fine birds, including my second garden Woodlark and a brief snatch of Willow Warbler. There are lots of unidentified clips to puzzle over through the winter months … so I might yet dig out another interesting species.

Thermal #vizmig on spring and autumn nights has shown me hundreds of birds but I have recognized very few and heard almost none, so what gets #nocmig recorded is only the tip of the iceberg.

So that was my garden 2024 … gripping after 20 years to add 6 species to the garden list (now 126) and 2 more to the recording list. It’s still giving me a lot of pleasure to find out what’s about when I am not.

2024 was an excellent 5th year of garden #nocmig, along with daytime recording and #vizmig. Over
229 nights I sound-recorded 99 species, plus 8 seen-only, from my mid-Berkshire garden 64 km
from the coast. Here are the highlights …

Glad the Barn Owl was still around.

Thanks for the info 🙏 Ordered mine Monday. It’s not appeared on UK tracking yet or heard from customs. Reading all the threads, interrogating all websites I can find ahead of delivery. Living in an excellent location for #vizmig, want to get my head around probability versus confidence. #BWPUC

Top views of some of the farms numerous Bullfinches and Goldfinches too along with a confiding Kestrel.
