The dunnock in the sun, facing the viewer, stands on a moss-covered terrace and appears to be hunting for tiny creatures. The middle spotted woodpecker has clung to a large conifer cone hanging from a string and is using its sharp beak to peck out the remaining fat and seeds from the crevices, which had been filled with them for the birds.
Since he’s only visited our garden a few times this winter, it seems the middle spotted woodpecker is making up for it now. With its long, pointed beak, the bird can easily get to the tasty scraps of food.
