And finally, #Vulci ❤️
Yesterday we made a brief pause from the lab to take a look at the temples… it’s always special to see them when the fields are green and the sky is a deep, vivid blue 🌿💙

SHEET BRONZE HANDS, C7 BCE. MUSEO DELL'ARTE SALVATA

These hands were crafted from a single sheet of bronze, folded along the edges of the elongated fingers, with embossed nails and thumbs curved outward. The partially closed wrists bear holes for attaching the plates. Similar pairs of bronze (or other metal alloy) sheet hands have been found in many tombs in Vulci, dating to around the C7 BCE, often associated with very rich funerary equipment. Traces of textile on them and their positions suggest they were parts of composite statues made from various materials, with metal sheets over perishable cores. These may be the earliest attempts at full-round statuary, meant to represent the deceased and symbolically restore their lost physical presence after cremation.

One of the most surprising displays in the #AulaOttagona of the #BathsofDiocletian in #Rome is this pair of bronze #Etruscan hands, which were probably part of an effigy of the deceased in a tomb in the #Vulci area, at the beginning of Etruscan sculpture. #AncientBluesky 🏺

The remains of a black and white mosaic. There is a broad white border with two thinner bands of black then white mosaic. The main design is of black and white squares mixing solid black squares, solid white squares, squares divided into diagonal triangular quarters with the top and bottom triangles black and the side ones white alternating with ones with the colours reversed.

ARA GUGLIELMI, 300-280 BCE. VILLA GIULIA

eca . śuθic . velus . ezpus
clensi. cerine

This funerary cippus, found in a dig by the proprietor at Vulci on land owned by the Guglielmi family, has an inscription that spells out who was buried in the ground beneath: "This is the tomb area of Vel Ezpus (which) he built (also) for his son". This is the same formula that we find regularly in Latin funerary inscriptions, "fecit sibi et suis", "made this for himself and his family". The monument itself, its top sheared off, shows the deceased standing in a flat niche between two columns, formally dressed, possibly as a priest. The form of the cippus is strongly influenced by the Greek tombstone style called the heroon or hero's tomb, indicating the importance of the deceased.

This #Etruscan tombstone comes from #Vulci, and is now in the #VillaGiulia in #Rome. It still has traces of #polychromy, but the central figure is surrounded by an #inscription, for #EpigraphyTuesday, that echoes the same concerns of #Roman tomb inscriptions. #AncientBluesky 🏺

KYLIX WITH SATYR, 520-500 BCE. MUSEO NAZIONALE ETRUSCO DI VILLA GIULIA

Drink deep and you'll get in touch with your inner satyr. That's the message of this painting inside a black-glaze Attic kylix or wine cup, found in the "Kottabos" tomb in the necropolis at L'Osteria on the plateau of the Etruscan city of Vulci. This satyr is dancing like no one's looking, with a wine-skin in one hand and the other thrown out behind him. He's crowned with vine leaves but is otherwise unencumbered with clothing, and his erect phallus has the appropriate ancient Greek proportion of foreskin to shaft (1/3) for ideal beauty. He also sports an enviable six-pack and a less enviable equine tail. This kylix could easily have been used to play the game of kottabos after which the tomb was named: the game, imported from Greece, involved flicking the lees of the wine (the sediment left in the cup) at a post-like target in the centre of the room. The other drinkers could see the bottom of the kylix, which has stylised eyes on it and a scene of Odysseus and his men escaping the cave of Polyphemus; only the drinker got to see, up close, the erect phallus of the satyr, and perhaps moved on to the more erotic part of the symposion.
