Closeup of the belly of a Greek black-figure terracotta amphora. In the middle, Herakles - clad in his Nemean lionskin and with a bow case on his back), begins to mount a small platform while playing a large kithara, a stringed instrument frequently seen in the arms of Apollo. On the right, the goddess Athena sits on a folding stool - she wears a large crested helmet, and holds a long spear. Athena also wears her snaky aegis. On the left is the god Hermes, wearing his classic petasos hat and a caduceus wand - he steps forward and gestures at Herakles, perhaps presenting him to Athena. An odd scene on a Greek black-figure amphora depicts Herakles mounting a platform, playing a kithara for a seated Athena (Hermes behind him). Ironic given that Herakles killed his music teacher for criticizing his lyre playing! What is going on here? 🏺 1/

SPOLIA PAVEMENT, C. 1551. VILLA GIULIA In the famous Nymphæum of the Villa Giulia, built 1551-1555 by Bartolomeo Ammannati, a Florentine pupil of Michelangelo's, not only was there a conscious effort to evoke an ancient Roman imperial villa, but to make a water display using the nearby, and newly functional, Aqua Virgo aqueduct. Pope Julius III Ciocci del Monte, the villa's patron, richly decorated the villa's outdoor spaces with ancient statues taken from the Vatican palace, and these were moved back into the papal collections after Julius III's death in 1555. In the C19 most of the lower pavement of the Nymphæum was shattered when the Military Veterinary School was set up in the spaces around the lower two levels. So all that remains of the original spolia pavement is the small tongue that protrudes toward the splendid stucco caryatids. A triangle of yellow-orange giallo antico stands above a small half-circle of the same stone, and the wedges on either side are of pavonazzetto and cipollino.

ARA GUGLIELMI, 300-280 BCE. VILLA GIULIA eca . śuθic . velus . ezpus clensi. cerine This funerary cippus, found in a dig by the proprietor at Vulci on land owned by the Guglielmi family, has an inscription that spells out who was buried in the ground beneath: "This is the tomb area of Vel Ezpus (which) he built (also) for his son". This is the same formula that we find regularly in Latin funerary inscriptions, "fecit sibi et suis", "made this for himself and his family". The monument itself, its top sheared off, shows the deceased standing in a flat niche between two columns, formally dressed, possibly as a priest. The form of the cippus is strongly influenced by the Greek tombstone style called the heroon or hero's tomb, indicating the importance of the deceased.
This #Etruscan tombstone comes from #Vulci, and is now in the #VillaGiulia in #Rome. It still has traces of #polychromy, but the central figure is surrounded by an #inscription, for #EpigraphyTuesday, that echoes the same concerns of #Roman tomb inscriptions. #AncientBluesky 🏺
SKYTHES. RED-FIGURE KYLIX WITH LYRE PLAYER, C. 520 BCE. VILLA GIULIA This Attic wine-cup or kylix is signed by the artist Skythes, "the Scythian", whose work we know from a corpus of about 25 pieces, of which only this one has a full signature. Skythes' work is defined by his expressiveness and energy, unlike the restraint and dignity of his contemporary Epiktetos. Here we see a red-figure musician, nude, against a black hackground, his staff leaning against the red curve of the circle which defines the pictorial space. He's facing right with his knees bent, playing a lyre (more like a cithara) like a rock star, head thrown back in ecstasy, his instrument sticking out like an extension of his phallus, which we can also see as Skythes has made the body of the instrument transparent, just so we don't miss the metaphor. Sometimes a cithara is just a cithara, but this is not one of those times.

LARNAX WITH THE COMBAT BETWEEN ETEOCLES AND POLYNICES, 200-150 BCE. VILLA GIULIA This urn, which shows traces of the original polychromy, belongs to a group of terracotta urns made from moulds produced by workshops in the area of the Etruscan city of Chiusi. They were mass produced for customers who could not afford the more expensive alabaster or travertine urns. The lid is in the shape of a semi-recumbent male figure holding a votive plate (patera) in his right hand. The scene depicted on the front of the case, framed by two winged female genii (Vanth) holding torches, shows the duel to the death between Oedipus' sons, Eteocles and Polynices. who, after the death of their father, were vying for the government of the city of Thebes. This legend, set in the heroic age, is part of the saga of the Seven Against Thebes, which the great Greek tragedian Aeschylus staged in Athens in 467 BCE. The name "Eteocles" may be an authentic survival from the Bronze Age. It appears in royal genealogies at both Thebes and Orchomenos, and an Assyrian tablet (the language of international diplomacy in the Bronze Age) from about 1260 BCE found in the archives of Pylos mentions an "Etewokleweios" (full of the archaic digamma "w" that disappears with classical Greek) as harassing Hittite allies on the western coast of Anatolia.

SPOLIA FOUNTAIN, C2-C3 CE. VILLA GIULIA The Villa Giulia is a pale shadow of its vast original self, having been constructed by pope Julius III in 1551-1553 with large vineyards stretching out on either side of the formal garden, in conscious imitation of an ancient imperial villa. Expropriated by Paul IV, it was converted in 1769 into a barracks and a veterinary school by Clement XIV. Now only the formal garden remains, having been replanted in 1889 when Villa Giulia became the Royal Etruscan Museum. This fountain, fed with water from the nearby (and underground) Acqua Vergine, is at the centre of the back garden. It's formed of a Corinthian capital as a base, likely from the late C2, and a battered fountain basin with four lion heads spouting water, probably from the following century. The central finial and the lower basin are modern. But it is interesting to see how spolia played a part in Julius III's revival of an ancient Roman villa. If the fountain did survive from the original villa instead of being part of the 1889 restoration of the garden, it did so because it served as a watering trough for the horses stabled here when the villa became a cavalry barracks, though it may also have provided water for the veterinary school here. I rate its chances of being a survival from the C16 at maybe 50%, but even if it was part of the C19 restoration, it was certainly in the spirit of Julius III's concept of the villa.
#SpoliaSunday brings us to the #VillaGiulia in #Rome. The luxury-loving, pleasure-addicted pope Julius III filled this villa with ancient statues, which were carted off to the #Vatican after Julius' death. This little #spolia #fountain remains, a great example of #Renaissance #classicalreception.

One of my favourite museums is Villa Giulia in Rome - not just because it has a great collection of Etruscan stuff, but also because the place itself is quite beautiful, being an old (Renaissance) pope holiday home.
