A black and white aerial photograph of a small village in an agricultural landscape. Unusual regular lines are visible in a field in the centre, next to the main road through the village: they show the regular outline of part of a Roman fort, including a clear gap in the middle of the nearside, flanked by hollow squares. Beyond the buildings, a meadow rolls down to a winding beck.
The report from a 2013 geophysical survey by Wardell Armstrong Archaeology is available at: https://altogetherarchaeology.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/cp-10157-kirkby-thore-geophysical-survey-report.pdf
1959 aerial pic of Kirkby Thore fort (Bravoniacum), from the NW. Crop marks show the nearside wall & gate clearly, confirmed by geophysics in 2013 (see alt). The vicus extended into the field beyond the road - this was a substantial site. #RomanFortThursday #RomanBritain #Westmorland
