Waterlilies or Lotus? I thought I knew what I was looking at. White flowers on a pond, broad green leaves scattered across dark water — waterlilies, obviously. I was watching dragonflies darting above the surface, tiny frogs no bigger than my thumb hop between the pads, and capturing the flowers almost reflexively. Standard practice. Document what’s there, move on. The images went into Lightroom and sat. Months later, scrolling through the backlog, I uploaded them to iNaturalist for a proper identification. That’s when the algorithm corrected me. What I’d casually filed under “waterlilies” was actually two distinct species sharing the same water. The white American waterlily (_Nymphaea odorata_) floated on the surface, its notched pads sitting flat like dinner plates. But rising above them, on tall stems with round, uncut leaves, was American lotus (_Nelumbo lutea_). Waterlily leaves have a V-shaped notch and rest on the water. Lotus leaves are circular, waxy, and rise well above the surface on rigid stalks. The flowers are different too: waterlilies open flat, whilst lotus blooms are more cupped, with a distinctive seedpod in the centre. I wasn’t rushing. I wasn’t distracted. I was actively photographing the pond. But my brain had filed the scene under a familiar label and stopped looking. That’s the risk with pattern recognition — it’s efficient until it isn’t. You see what you expect, and expectation becomes a kind of blindness. Field guides help, but only if you think to consult them. I often don’t. The real challenge is recognising when you don’t know what you’re looking at. Standing at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve that day, I thought I did. It took a neural network and a huge global database of observations to show me otherwise. Humbling, that.
