Though her novels and stories are understood by scholars as the beginning of contemporary Black feminist literature bridging Harlem Renaissance writers like Zora Neale Hurston to such writers as Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and Maya Angelou Marshall's legacy is often overlooked.
