Gorged After variously feeding, it journeys across the all purpose trail, in search of a place to begin its transformation into a beautiful moth. Depending on the climate they stay in there pupal staged from anywhere to a few weeks, go several month.

This luna moth is a male. Its antennae are larger than females. Its colorization has a lighter lime-green hue compared females. It’s overall size is slightly smaller. These three differences are subtle but become easier to identify with more encounters. After female adults emerge from their cocoons in the leaf litter, they stay anchored on a tree all day emitting pheromones. This attracts males in the area, hence, why males’ antennae are larger! Both adults live for approximately 10 days. Males and females have a ration of food stored in their body from when they were a caterpillar. Once the food / energy is used up, they die. Until then, males will mate with as many females he can find. Females mate once. Females spend the rest of the short life span laying eggs on many host larval trees as she can. It is bittersweet yet beautiful cycle of life. I found a male and female luna moth on the same day. Odds are in our favor, they found each other and have completed their task to ensure the next generation of luna moths survive. lunamoth invertebrates biodiversity ecology moths
